CDC Staff Excited About New Facility 4-26-2011

It seems these days that it is harder and harder to feel like a kid again. The moment of wonder and excitement of a new idea seen in an adult’s eye? Talk to Bobbie Henderson about the new Child Development Center and one can find that look.

With construction slated to begin this summer on the new childcare facility, CDC Director Bobbie Mendenhall is excited to talk about the move to the state-of-the-art facility. The current CDC is approximately 800 square feet, and the new center will be a spacious 5,000 square feet. At the present facility all of the different age groups share the same room.

“One thing that you will notice is that you’ll see children that are eight years old all the way down to two years old, which is really a hard mixture. They just don’t belong together,” Mendenhall said. The new CDC will allow for the children to be divided into age appropriate groups and classrooms.

Several other highly anticipated features will be allotted by the spaciousness of the new CDC. “We will have a big piazza, so we will be able to have a lot of gross motor play,” Mendenhall says. Presently the CDC utilizes the multipurpose room or the aerobics room, but those rooms aren’t always available. Each group will also have their own play area adjacent to their classrooms. Add to this a large fenced outdoor play area, and the new facility should make nap time a welcome treat.

The new facility will also allow the CDC to serve more children. At present, CDC staff, student workers and education students help take care of the responsibilities at the center. “When we get to the new facility we will be able to enroll between 42 and 46 children at one time, so we may need some more staff, but that will come with enrollment,” Mendenhall said. Quite simply, as demand for childcare services increases, the CDC will provide the staff as required by state law.

Parents will also enjoy the conveniences, which will come with the new CDC. The new center will have a more accessible area for dropping off and signing in their children. At present parents must find a place to park, walk to the building, and come inside the CDC room to sign in their children.

The CDC provides breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner, and an evening snack to the children. Tentative plans include keeping the working relationship with AVI to provide the food for the children. Due to its new location, the CDC may need warming units for the food during transport. Details are still being worked out on the logistics of getting the food from the cafeteria area to the new CDC.

Plans are still being discussed to provide infant care at some time in the future. The original plans called for infant care, however, the area for infant care was removed from the CDC when the size of the new building was reduced. At present the CDC will serve children two and up, but if funding increases the CDC is designed for future expansion, which could provide room for infant care.

“The infant ratio in WV is one teacher for four infants … each teacher can watch eight two year olds,” Mendenhall said. Plus extra room is necessary for cribs and diaper changing stations.

“It is more expensive, but it is something that is needed, plus another good thing about having infants is that you have added stability,” Mendenhall added. This stability would come from being able to enroll the child as an infant, and allowing them to stay with one childcare program.

Mrs. Mendenhall also noted that many area day-care centers have extensive waiting lists. She was on 15 waiting lists, while she was looking for infant care. The rates at the CDC are extremely rare in the fact that they allow the parents to pay an hourly rate for their services. “Many other childcare centers in the area do not offer hourly rates, they say you pay for a weekly slot, whether the child is there or not,” Mendenhall said. Not only is the CDC affordable, but parents enrolled in college also have access to the Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) grant, which helps pay for childcare for parents attending college. Several other state and local grants are available for parents, and the CDC can provide assistance to parents regarding the funding information.

The new CDC will also provide greater learning opportunities for students who are enrolled in the Early Childhood and the Elementary Education programs. This field experience helps with their pre-kindergarten certifications.

One thing is for certain; the new CDC will make the staff, students, and the children all a little bit more joyful and bring some wide eyes, when the doors open next year.

Students Build Solar Collectors to Conserve Enviroment 4-26-2011

The ability to cut household utility costs and conserve the planet is the desire and need of most homes nationwide. Solar thermal installation designs and ideas allow nature to handle a large portion of household heating needs; some of which are being learned at WVU Parkersburg.

Solar Thermal Installation (Set155) students are developing a thorough knowledge of the solar water heating systems, which they have designed. Ordered parts are arriving daily while the fabrication of various other parts is beginning in the campus fabrication class. Whereas the basic knowledge of how each system works is crucial, the entire project from energy analysis to unit installation can be extensive.

The installation of the collectors is very crucial in determining the efficiency of the heating system. If the solar collectors are hooked up in a series, simply one hooked up directly in line with another, the heating capabilities are greatly improved, according to Gary Thompson, class instructor. The proper angle and southerly direction of the collector will determine the heating efficiency as well.

The collectors themselves are relatively cheap at approximately $180 each, but the rest of the material and supplies needed, depending on the setup, can quickly elevate the costs. Pumps, heat exchangers, thermal couplers and more are relatively numerous to the system and can be expensive; however, the overall savings will eventually pay for the costs.

With the new solar collectors and other parts now physically available to them, the students have begun to perform temporary set-ups: explaining how their system will hook up to the collectors, circulate and heat the household water. “Next week, we will start mounting the hardware to the white-boards, the students will need to practice their soldering techniques and create a list of tools and expendable materials,” Thompson said.

The finished products, the carts, will be used as trainer models. “We are creating carts that will be used by other classes to help them learn,” Ruth Wagoner, drainback team leader, said. The satisfaction of a job well done is coupled with a well-rounded training experience.

The class also instructs students on the importance of energy conservation and the ability to perform energy consumption analysis or site surveys on a building. A site survey includes the knowledge of customization and energy needs of an individual system, the documentation needed and the ability to determine the permits required in the area. The energy conservation aspect is of growing importance to the environmentally minded.

The damage being created by the use of fossil fuels is not irreversible, but steps need to be taken soon, according to environmentalists. “This class will make one aware of the damage that the use of non-renewable energy sources can cause,” Wagoner said. “It teaches us other ways of using energy wisely,” Wagoner continued. This skill is yet another form of marketable knowledge learned in the duration of this class.

The sales, marketing and distribution of these new systems appear to be leading motivating factors to these students. “I want to design and build one of these for my own house, so when I begin to sell them, I will be able to show one in working condition,” John Shreve, drainback team member, said. “I have been in sales almost my entire life; I hope to use this knowledge to sell these systems,” Charlotte Fittro, drainback team member, said. The economic downsizing that has affected this area is yet another factor motivating the students.

“With all of the plants shutting down around here, we are going to have to use our new knowledge to make it,” Fittro said. The future for solar technology is bright, relatively cheap and very environmentally friendly.

The atmosphere within The Hot Braza leaves something to be desired at the least. The walls are plain and fake potted plants line the walls along with large televisions. It doesn’t exactly scream, “Fabulous Brazilian food sold here!” However, they certainly do have some of the best food in town.

One of the most interesting things about The Hot Braza, which is located on Avery Street, is the fact that they have a Brazilian buffet. The buffet is served daily and it includes a full salad bar, soup of the day and a traditional all-you-can-eat Brazilian meal. The buffet is only served from 11 a.m – 2 p.m., but it only costs $7.95.

The salad bar is just a typical bar with several dressings and a vegetable plate. Be sure to try the vegetable dip – it’s fabulous. Immediately after the salad bar is the hot bar. Keep in mind that the plates for the hot bar are actually on the right side of the bar, on the other side are more salad plates, which are significantly smaller.

Spicy smelling foods seem to be the staple at the bar, try everything. The rice and black beans, a traditional Brazilian staple, are always on the bar. They are probably the best beans and rice in the area too. The meatballs have sort of a kick to them as well and compliment the noodles perfectly.

The bar also offers something uncommonly found in the area – fried bananas. Fried bananas are amazing. It’s half of a banana that has been fried in a sweet breading. They turn out crunchy on the outside, while the warm banana-inside is practically melting – so delicious.

Other than the bar, customers can order off of the full menu, which includes a variety of traditional dishes. The menu prices are a little steeper than the bar, but the portions are equal to the price.

Finally, The Hot Braza pulls out all the stops for dessert. They offer a great caramel flan that has a really thick consistency. They also offer a passion fruit mousse and chocolate cake. However, the one dessert that cannot be missed is the blueberry cheesecake. The cake is massive and covered in perfectly tart blueberries. The reason that it is so delicious is that is doesn’t taste like a complete block of cream cheese like most restaurant cheesecakes. The cheesecake was wonderful and a perfect end to a really great, traditional meal.

We all Scream for Scream 4 4-26-2011

It has been ten years since the ghost face killer has haunted Sidney Prescott and those around her.

“Scream” fans everywhere have all been anticipating the release of the newest addition to the horror franchise, and they will not disappoint with “Scream 4.” The film, directed by Wes Craven, made over $18 million at the box office during opening weekend.

Just like most “Scream” films, number four hosted several celebrities, including the inevitable return of Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courtney Cox. Along with the veterans, were newcomers Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettierre.

There are many similarities in the newest film compared to the three previous Craven directed slashers. The story line is based around Sidney’s hometown of Woodsboro, which starts facing tragedy again after Prescott’s return home. The plot is comparative to other scary movies and often pokes jokes at the predictable scenes.

With each new film comes at least one new killer. And with each new killer comes several murders. Sidney’s younger cousin, played by Emma Roberts, takes over the role of the high school girl struck by tragedy and made famous by Sidney in the first film.

The rules of a horror film are broken because of the new decade. No longer are people safe because they’re a virgin or simply because they didn’t say, “I’ll be right back” when leaving the room. Anyone and everyone is a target for “Scream 4.”

It’s up to the viewers to decide if the newest movie matches up with or surpasses the others, in my opinion, it most certainly does. “Scream 4” is fantastically entertaining and at times, even a little scary.

Viewers can catch “Scream 4” in theaters now, along with, “Rio The Movie 3D,” “Arthur,” “Hanna,” “Soul Surfer,” “Your Highness,” “Hop,” “Insidious,” “Source Code,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules,” and “Limitless.”

The Summer Cycle 4-26-2011

Life is filled with cycles that come in many different forms and can bring about a variety of changes and challenges. In both nature and college we are approaching the end of the spring semester and the beginning of the summer cycle; a time that often brings with it an opportunity to start anew.

Those of you who are preparing to take that long awaited walk of achievement that results in your receiving a degree or formal completion of an academic program are at the beginning of a new cycle in your life that will be marked by an accomplishment that is forever yours to take pride in. Others who are preparing to take the summer off from college may be taking advantage of the opportunity to work so as to replenish bank accounts, spend time with children or possibly take some time to travel and have fun. Still others are preparing to use this summer cycle to take classes and thus get a few more credits entered on their transcript.

A change in life cycles can have a significant affect our emotional and mental wellbeing. Depression, for example, can run in cycles. In the case of those who may suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), the increase in sunshine found in the summer cycle can bring much desired relief from feelings of depressions. Certain times of the year, such as holidays, can spark an emotional response. Participating in summer related activities can allow for a diversion which may temporarily lesson feelings of depression; while other traditional summer activities such as family reunions and having the children at home all summer can add to the stress factor.

Students at WVU Parkersburg Run Top-Simulated Business 4-26-2011

The Business Policy class at WVU Parkersburg is the “capstone” course for those seeking a bachelor’s degree in business.

The capstone experience is designed to both assess what students have learned during their academic program and to put the “icing on the cake” of students’ knowledge bases.

A major part of the Policy course is the online simulation called “Glo-Bus.” This enables students to virtually “run” a camera manufacturing company. Each week of the course is a year of the simulation. The students make decisions about how many workers to employ, how much to pay them, how many cameras to make, what features are on the cameras and how much they want to charge for the cameras.

This semester there are 12 teams competing and they are broken into two competing industries. It is noteworthy that five of the 12 teams scored in the top 100 globally over the past few weeks. This is the first time the college has ever had that many teams scoring so successfully on the simulation.

Accounting major and member of Team E Southwest, Brian Allman, explains that it is the team’s responsibility to decide how to distribute their inventory to box stores, online companies and small independent retailers.

“Since I enjoy numbers and research, this course follows my career and was a good fit,” Allman said.

The analytic data that is available through the online software, provides information that helps students track their companies’ return on equity, revenues, and earnings per share, stock price, etc. They are able to follow their progress and see where their company ranks among the other colleges that participate.

Allman feels that experience is the key to his team’s success.

Team Golf member, Jeremy Davis, feels that “being able to apply the knowledge gained during college,” has been the factor that has put his team on the Glo-Bus map.

“It is all about accounting and where to apply your resources,” said Davis.

Through the Glo-Bus simulation, students are able to put their education into practical application.

“Trial and error has contributed to our success,” Davis said.

Student Lora Zseidler member of Team A feels “it is good to work as a team when you have reliable people to count on.”

Zseilder is originally from the Ukraine and moved to the United States eight years ago. She feels that this simulation has helped her gain an understanding for how businesses run in the U.S.

Cassey Bell from Team Adidas added that this has been a very challenging experience for her. But due to her team’s hard work and dedication, Team A has made great improvements over the last few weeks, improvements that put her team 81st overall for team return on investment.

WVU Parkersburg students are competing with teams from both domestically and internationally, including University of North Carolina-Greensboro, Clemson University, campuses of Penn State University and State University of New York.

Donny Jones Shares His Love for Civil War 4-26-2011

A battle-hardened veteran of the Civil War walks the halls of WVU Parkersburg. Donny Jones, a current sophomore studying Political Sciences and History, faces the tiring schedule of student life and also spends several weekends portraying 1st Sergeant Jones of the 36th Virginia Infantry, Company A, also known as the Buffalo Guard.

The Buffalo Guard was originally formed in Buffalo, West (ern) Virginia in 1859 and was accepted into the Confederate States service in July 1861 according to Jones.

“The Buffalo Guard has battle honors including Carnifex Ferry, Kessler’s Cross Lanes, Fort Donnellson and Fayetteville. The Guard was disbanded in April 1865,” Jones said. Jones’ fascination with the Civil War started at a very young age.

As a child, Jones would accompany his grandfather while hunting for Civil War relics in area encampments and other sites. “I saw my first reenactment when I was 12 and joined the 36th Infantry when I was 14, working my way up through the ranks,” Jones said. Jones was promoted to the rank of 1st Sergeant Sunday, Mar 27. “As a re-enactor, my goal is to portray the average confederate soldier, recreate battles for the public to see, and live as the boys of 1865 lived for weekends at a time,” Jones said. The schedule keeps Jones busy, averaging one event a month between Mar and Nov.

“We travel all over this somewhat local area of W.Va., VA., Tenn. and Ky.,” Jones said. This may sound exciting, but this hobby is not for the faint of heart.

“You need to have a love of the Civil War or at least of US History,” Jones said.

The Buffalo Guard has the proud honor of being the best Confederate impression in the state and maintains a very strict uniform regulation, but the complete uniform of the re-enactor can be compiled over time.

With plenty of veteran re-enactors available, the uniform kit of a new recruit will quickly become authentic.

“Achieving a good impression does take a little time,” Jones said.

McGovern's Leads to Pursuit of Hobbies 4-26-2011

All great things must come to an end, but for retiring WVU Parkersburg professor, Martha McGovern, great things have yet to come.

Dr. McGovern is teaching her last classes during the spring semester at WVU Parkersburg campus.

Dr. McGovern has touched the lives of many students, faculty and staff members of the college over the last ten and a half years. McGovern began her career at the college during the 2001 spring semester. Many of her fellow faculty members gathered on April 20 to wish her a fond farewell and to express their gratitude and admiration for such a great teacher.

Professor of Social Sciences, Robert Cordell said, “My dictionary has her picture beside the word lady.” Many others added that Dr. McGovern is a profound and ethical person and all are proud to have been her colleague.

“Your retirement has left a great mark on the college,” added Dr. Cindy Gissy, Education and Humanities division chair.

Dr. David Lancaster said of the departing professor, "She will be sadly missed. Dr. McGovern is a credit to our profession."

Dr. Gissy also praised McGovern for her teaching and the amount of her students that continue their education in graduate school.

"All was due to the foundation she laid through her teaching," Gissy said.

Life after retirement for Dr. McGovern will not be one of rest and relaxation. She has many goals that she would like to accomplish. Starting with cleaning out her office and organizing all the memories created over the years.

Another passion for the professor is writing poetry. She developed a love for writing from her grandmother.

“It is a way to know someone, to read their poetry,” McGovern said.

McGovern does not write for the general public, she does so for her family. Her poems are inspired by her family experiences and her poetry will help future generations to know her through reading her poetry.

Weaving will also play a major role in her retirement time. Dr. McGovern recently purchased a large loom and wants to learn the craft.

Retirement is “uncharted territory” for this busy teacher. She began her career in 1966 in a newly integrated East Cleveland.

“They were idealistic,” McGovern said, “They hoped to be a model integrated community.”

After leaving Cleveland, she realized that teaching others how to teach reading was where she felt her interest laid McGovern started her university teaching career at Georgia Southern University. Even though she loved the school, the heat was something she could stand. After attending a conference years prior in Marietta, Oh., McGovern decided that was where she wanted to live.

McGovern reviewed The Chronicle of Higher Education, looking for a job away from the heat of Georgia and what lie in front of her, was the job of her dreams. The job she wanted was available at WVU Parkersburg mixing both reading development education and teacher education. The rest is history. McGovern moved to the area and made it her home.

During her career, Dr. McGovern has worked with many students and thrived by empowering those she taught.

“I was able to empower them to do what they wanted,” McGovern said. “I was able to empower them to be the best teachers they could be.”

In advice given to her first year students, “Be reliable and do your assignments, have a good attitude by bettering yourself and have a sense of where you are.” McGovern said, “Time management is always an issue for new students, so be in control of your time. Lastly, take initiative. Truly want to show what you know and truly learn what you can.”

McGovern feels that not all students are able to learn in the form that material is presented and some should seek alternative methods.

“Go the extra mile to make it your own,” McGovern said, “Success takes grit and you want to weave into yourself.”

Police Officer Recognized During Police Memorial Week 4-26-2011

The United States recognizes heroism and bravery by the observance of Memorial Day on May 29. What a lot of citizens don’t know is that police officers have their own holiday dedicated to them as well.

Police Memorial Week, celebrated May 15-21, is a federal holiday that was established for citizens to express their gratitude to those who serve. This holiday honors police officers all over the nation. Although this holiday isn’t as prevalent as Memorial Day, Police Memorial Week recognizes law enforcement agencies all over the nation for their hard work, long hours, and dedication to serving their communities.

The holiday originated in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy declared May 15 as National Police Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week when May 15 starts as National Police Week. President Bill Clinton passed a law in 1994 that summons for the U.S. flag to fly at half-staff May 15.

Captain of the Wood County Sheriff’s office, Mark King, says, “The most rewarding part of my job is being able to talk to and help children.” When asked the same question, WVU Parkersburg campus police officer Al Collins said, “keeping people safe.”

Since there is currently not an event in Parkersburg scheduled in observance of the holiday, anyone can individually celebrate Police Week May 15-21 to show your appreciation for their local police officers. Police Memorial Day/Week doesn’t have to be celebrated strictly during the designated calendar times.

In 1989, the first annual candlelight vigil was held at the site of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Judiciary Square in Washington, DC. In October 1991, President George Bush dedicated the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. To this day, the memorial contains the names of more than 16,000 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

I'VE GOT TO KNOW ABOUT FIRE SAFETY 4-26-2011

When being taught about fire safety, most people were taught the communal phrase “stop, drop, and roll.” The Wood County Fire Prevention and Safety Team believes that there is a lot more to fire safety that is imperative for people of all ages to know.

The Team will be holding a safety fair at WVU Parkersburg on May 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fair is free to the public, and all ages are welcomed and encouraged to attend. President and founder Chris Pedersen expects that around 3,500 residents will attend this year’s fair.

Petersen said “We want to hold these fairs every year because we believe that safety education should be a continuous process and a way of life, and we have an unwavering devotion to educating everyone on the importance of practicing safe living.”

The event will consist of over 25 different learning stations, ranging from fire safety to disaster and highway safety. A free, healthy lunch will also be served during the fair. This event is designed for people of all ages. The organization received a $100,000 FEMA grant for a real-life simulation trailer to demonstrate fire devastation and how to prevent it. “This is not meant to be a scare tactic by any means, just a reality check,” Petersen said.

The Wood County Fire Prevention and Safety team is a non-profit; government funded 501 C-3 (which means volunteer, tax exempt organization) that formed in June 2010.Pedersen, who is also an EMT, firefighter, and Public Service trainer, believes that, “99% of fires can be prevented with education. People are more in control then they think, if they just take the time to learn. No one is too young or too old to know the importance of safety.” The team focuses on educating residents of all ages on the importance of fire safety, and life safety in general. The organization also has a program geared towards college students called the “I’ve Got to Know” program, as well as a senior citizens program. Residents may tune in to WLTP Talk Radio AM 910 for their radio show every Tuesday morning at 7:30a.m.

The Fire Prevention and Safety Team works with local fire departments, law enforcement, EMS, health care providers and other state and local agencies to help provide a fun, informative, and focused “hands-on” learning experience.

“Our goal is that everyone who attended the fair leaves feeling confident that they are knowledgeable about what to do in an emergency situation,” Pedersen said.

Campus is More Secure Than Thought 4-26-2011

WVU Parkersburg campus police, teamed up with 20 professionals from different departments of the college, to create a sizeable safety team for students on campus.

The Threat Assessment team of WVU Parkersburg consists of professors from the Social Justice and Social Sciences departments, wellness and psychology professors, safety officers, counselors, local law enforcement, and other members of the faculty. The team meets one time a semester in order to discuss any safety issues that have been brought to their attention, or that they have observed themselves while on campus.

Issues are addressed and resolved by the Threat Assessment team. These include: threatening text messages or threats within the classroom, vague or obvious threats to the building or people in the building, questionable dangerous behavior, and other triggers that make anyone on campus feel threatened. No safety issue is to inconsequential for the Threat Assessment team to scout out.

The Threat Assessment team also deals with safety issues such as foundation cracks, wintertime parking lot dangers, and other building maintenance problems that are safety concerns.

The members of the team have a commitment to safety. The campus police deal with any immediate dangers. In instances that are not emergencies, the team meets to determine how to deal with the issue at hand. The attorney general assigned to campus handles any legal issues that cannot be resolved by the team.

Campus security and Threat Assessment team members aren’t the only ones who take action against risks on campus. Students are welcomed and encouraged to report anything that they feel could be a threat to their safety. “Threats or safety concerns may be reported anonymously, or not, whichever you choose,” head campus police officer Al Collins said. “Even if a student thinks that their concern is not important or maybe not even a threat, they should still report it anyway, you can’t be too sure.’’

Tragic instances in recent history, such as the Virginia Tech disaster and the shooting in Tucson, have the Threat Assessment team on guard. Al Collins says, “After tragedies like 9/11 and Columbine, we can’t be too safe. Look for Evaluations on OLSIS 4-26-2011

It is evaluation time for the WVU Parkersburg faculty. In the past, evaluations were mainly completed during class or through OLSIS for eCampus courses. Starting this semester, all evaluations will be competed online in OLSIS.

Evaluations became available through OLSIS Friday, April 15 and will be accessible through April 29.

The Student Evaluation of Instruction Surveys is a valuable way for the college administration to gather student opinion in reference to the instruction received during a course.

In the past, the percentage of students completing the surveys have been significantly lower than those provided during class. Student feedback is important for the review process at the college.

Annual review files of faculty, of which student opinions are a part, are considered in contract renewal, promotion and tenure decisions.

In addition, the evaluations help instructors assess their strengths and weaknesses and, in turn, improve their teaching.

If students do not complete an evaluation, no feedback is recorded. Only when a student takes the time to fill out the evaluation, does the college administration see the impact an instructor has on the course and instruction.

The process to complete the survey is simple. Students need to log into OLSIS and once in their account, click on the link that says "Course Evaluations".

Select the appropriate evaluation for the course students wish to complete. Simply answer the multiple choices questions and submit once completed.

All surveys are confidential. Neither StudentIDs nor any other identifying information will be recorded

Student A and Student B are freshmen in a 100-level class. Student A attends every class and develops proper study habits. Student B never shows up, but reads the book. Both students pass the class. Two years later Student A and B are in a 300-level class. Student A once again attends every class and devotes a large portion of time to the class. Student B shows up for the tests, reads the book and fails the class.

Students A and B attended a college without an attendance policy, and, in the end, they both got what they deserved. However, Student B did not waste the instructor’s time with ridiculous excuses of illnesses, “car trouble” and various other reasons because there was no reason to lie to skirt around a policy.

Students are paying to attend college and, therefore, should not be subjected to a college-wide attendance policy past the freshman year. Students who wish to waste money and not attend upper-level classes are only hurting themselves in the long run. However, freshmen are often caught up in the newness of college and actually attending classes can be tough.

In upper-level classes, having a student who shows up every other three classes and tries to make up their work compromises the education of those who do show up. Most colleges believe that having an attendance policy will prevent this, and all students will show up for classes. Not true. Students see an attendance policy as a loophole. If they can miss two classes, they’ll miss three and claim a deathly illness that kept them from class for three weeks. If the attendance policy were eliminated, these students would not need to make excuses and take advantage of the professors who are too kind to the students taking advantage of them. They simply would not show to class and would lose points for late work instead of being given extra time for “illness.”

Illness does occur, but a responsible student can e-mail the professor in ample time to explain the illness, ask for the work and have it turned in on time without an issue. The other problem is how awful these students are treating the teachers. The professors at the college are more than helpful to students who need help and offer their time and resources to make sure they succeed. When a student shows sporadically for class asking for help and time extensions, they are taking time away from the class and the professors’ time – which is not endless. They have lives, too.

The only exceptions to a mandatory attendance policy are freshmen. Freshmen should be required to attend x amount of classes, based on x amount of hours in the class. Since freshman year is full of new experiences and is really the first taste of college life, they require a little more of a rigid structure. It builds good study habits and attendance habits. If freshmen learn attendance habits in the first year, there may be fewer students like Student B in the long run taking up time, taking advantage of the teacher and taking college like a hand out.

SGA Elections Online, Candidates Needed 4-12-2011

During the past two years the Student Government Association (SGA) has not had the chance to have their members officially fight for their position in SGA. Whether the position was for president, a vice president, a director, or a senator, no SGA member ran opposition. This year current president Teresa Wamer is hoping that elections will be needed in for members to claim their seats. “I always encourage people to run in opposition. I think it’s good for everyone if the person elected had to work for it,” Wamer said.

Elections will take place the third week of April. In the past, voting was only in person at a table placed in the hallway. This year elections will be held online for the first time. “It is the first time we have tried this and we are hopeful that it will give all our students the ability to vote for their student leadership,” Wamer said. All students have to do is log in to their OLSIS accounts and fill out their election forms. As of right now, Wamer believes that the ballots will open Monday, April 18, and close Thursday, April 21, at noon.

An email will be sent out a week before elections to remind students to vote. It is up to each candidate to decide if he or she wishes to campaign for the positions.

Official candidates have not been announced. It is required that each candidate running for a position will have to officially announce his or her candidacy before the second week of April. Candidates wishing to run for positions are not considered official candidates until the Vice President of Academic Affairs office checks potential candidates' GPA and student statues. The main factor that allows a SGA member to run for a position is to have already been a member of SGA for at least a full semester.

Currently SGA will be losing President Wamer, and Vice President of Finance, Alyssa Anderson. “Organizations need change to survive, and I want to see SGA be amazing,” said Wamer.

Even though Wamer is giving up her role as president, she is still planning on running for a senate position. Anderson is giving up her position in order to spend more time with her two children and concentrate more on her schoolwork.

The positions that are open for running for the next election are: President, Vice President of Finance, Vice President of Communications, Vice President of Jackson County Center, five directors, and several senators. “I have the upmost confidence that whoever wins my seat will serve the students of WVU-P well,” Wamer said

JCC EXCLUSIVE: Students get Cultured at "International" Luncheon 4-12-2011

Students of the Jackson County Campus of WVU Parkersburg (JCC) displayed their knowledge during the International Luncheon activities on Wed Mar 30, from 11a.m. -1p.m.. Three instructors, Dean Fisher, Truman Long and Dianne Davis required students to study different cultures and create a presentation for the event; approximately 50-60 display boards were present.

A luncheon of tacos-in-a-bag and drinks was sponsored by Student Services. Some of the other foods and refreshments were supplied by students of Dianne Davis’ class in which the students were required to bring in an ethnic dish from the country for which they presented.

Dean Fisher involved two of his classes: WV History 250 and American History 152. The WV History students were required to develop a project centered on a hero or heroine who had connections with Appalachian heritage. Some of the presentations included General Patton, Charles Yeager and Hal Greer. “The connections to Appalachian heritage were loosely governed, I just required some sort of connection,” Fisher stated. American History students have been required to present a person who was connected to the history of the nation.

Brad Warner was very excited to show his presentation covering Charles “Chuck” Yeager. “He had true West Virginia grit. He didn’t care what people thought or said. He just pushed on and done his job. He was the guy that actually trained the astronauts in supersonic flight, a guy from West Virginia,” Warner exclaimed. “Everyone knows that he broke the sound barrier, but most do not realize that he was also the first to go twice the speed of sound,” Warner continued. Warner’s display included a hand-carved representation of Yeager’s supersonic plane.

Truman Long’s sociology class looked at the importance and the impact of West Virginia immigrants. “Immigrants made very important contributions to West Virginia culture,” Long said. Students studied the important impacts made by Italians, Scottish, Irish and more within the West Virginian society.

Dianne Davis had her online class, Professional Development, study the important contributions made by women in various countries. “I wanted the students to study the demographics of the countries,” Davis said. One presentation studied the country of Brazil.

Students Tammy Babylon, Laura Armstrong and Melissa Sims discussed in detail, within their presentation, the work accomplished by women. “I’ve been to Brazil, it’s a fascinating place. It seemed almost natural to do the presentation on that,” Babylon said. “I was amazed to learn that the current President of Brazil is a woman,” Babylon said.

The Luncheon had the entire lobby/multi-purpose area full of people and presentations. Several interesting displays and people made the event very successful and entertaining, according to one student in attendance of the event.

South of the River Band Takes Over WVU Parkersburg 4-12-2011

South of the River band started in March 2006 at the Sandyville Relay for Life. Now they are playing fairs and festivals all over West Virginia. They have opened up for many national acts like Luke Bryant & Jason Michael Carroll, just to name a few. They are opening for at least three national acts this summer, including Jimmy Wayne at the West Virginia Interstate Fair.

The band members are Austin Clark (lead guitarist & singer), Wyatt McClead (bassist), Tarah Marie (lead vocals & guitar), Adam Spaur (drums), Dana McClead (rhythm guitar). Tarah is the new lead singer and won the WV Colgate Country Showdown in 2008. She brings a new flair and a little spunk to the band.

With musical influences that range from Lady Antebellum and Miranda Lambert to Lynyrd Skynyrd, the opportunity to showcase their varied musical interests has led to a renewed excitement about performing. They do songs such as “I Love Rock-N-Roll,” “Mary Jane,” “Little White Church,” and “Here for the Party.” They also have originals like a song called “Fairytale.”

South of the River Band will be at WVU Parkersburg on April 29 doing a show in which they are going to be filming a music video. The show will be in the college multi-purpose room. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the show starts at 7 p.m.

Clark said they are filming the video to gain some publicity; also the West Virginia Central Credit Union is sponsoring the show. Clark said, “Come out to see us for a great show, you will not be disappointed.”

The WVUP SEA is bringing the band in as a fundraiser so they can bring some more events and fun to the college’s students. Tickets are on sale now for this show costing $2 for all students, faculty and staff, and $5 for everyone else. Tickets will be $5 at the door. Ticket price includes food, as SEA will be hosting a cookout for all ticket holders.

For those wanting an opportunity to be in a music video or just hear a great band, this event will provide such. Tickets can be purchased at the WVU Parkersburg Business Office or at any West Virginia Central Credit Union.

The band will be doing a meet in greet at the end of the show.

Couple Makes it Work 4-12-2011

Freshman Gina Sikorski is sweet, pretty and silly according to her boyfriend of eight-and -half-months freshman Doug Gillespie. Gina likes being with Doug because he is handsome, a good listener and he also makes her laugh.

The couple met at the Jackson pool in the summer of 2010. They both worked there, but they had different job descriptions. Working as a lifeguard was Gina’s job while Doug worked in the basket room where he took money for people to enter the pool area.

In this couple’s case, it was the girl who made the first move. Gina gave Doug her number, and he decided to text Gina. The couple spent the rest of their summer working together at the pool. When it came time to go to college, Gina left for West Virginia University while Doug stayed at WVU Parkersburg.

Staying at home for Doug made sense to him because he could get his core classes complete. Also, there is a big difference in tuition between WVU and WVU Parkersburg.

However, Gina made the decision to go up to WVU. “I always wanted to go away,” Gina said. Even though she was about two hours from home, the couple still saw each other every weekend. If Gina wanted to come back home she had to ride back from Morgantown with her sister. “I normally drove up to see her,” Doug said.

When the Drake concert was given in Morgantown Oct. 7, Doug bought the tickets for him and Gina to attend as a birthday gift for her.

But her decision to go away to college did not last long. She only stayed at WVU for her first semester and is now attending WVU Parkersburg. “I came back because I was just confused about my schooling,” said Gina.

After all the stressing of the first semester finals was over, the couple spent their Christmas together. A pair of diamond earrings was Gina’s gift from Doug, while she bought him a very expensive Egyptian cotton bedspread.

The break from college could not last forever. The couple started their second semester at the same college both studying in education.

Not only are they in the same building for this semester, but they also share two classes together: English 102 and First Aid. “We are not the couple that like does each other's homework. We just remind each other about different homework assignments and when test dates are,” Doug said.

With the classes that the couple does not have together, Doug will wait outside for Gina or the other way around.

Gina lives in Williamsotwn and Doug lives in North end Parkersburg. So because Doug’s house is kind of on Gina’s way to the college, she picks him up every morning before class.

Separate from all the schoolwork, the couple likes to watch movies together and spend time with each other’s families. Since the couple started dating, they always wanted to go walk down by the river by the floodwall. But, because of construction, the floodwall has been kept close.

However, on Valentine’s Day they could walk by the river. The wall was actually open. Unfortunately just because it was open it didn’t mean that they were still allowed to be down there. “We actually made it past the floodwall opening for the first time, but shortly after we got across it the construction workers told us that we needed to leave,” Gina said.

Also for Valentine’s Day, Gina made Doug a homemade cake and card. She also went out and bought a box of chocolates. Doug gave her a bouquet of flowers and cupcakes.

The sense of caring from Valentine’s Day carries on throughout their whole relationship. “We don’t really fight,” said Doug. If the couple has any kind of disagreement, they talk it out and move on with their relationship.

Both Gina and Doug plan on graduating from WVU Parkersburg. However, Doug wishes to continue his education and receive his master’s degree at WVU.

Veteran Corps Hard at Work 4-12-2011

The new campus organization aimed at promoting veterans and veteran opportunities is another step closer to obtaining official campus organizational recognition. The WVU Parkersburg Veterans Corps voted to approve a set of bylaws and voted three fellow veterans into office as president, vice president and secretary/treasurer.

The university will only recognize an organization that has met these basic requirements: the institution of bylaws and election of officers. The bylaws are simply a very basic set of existing bylaws which will need to be fine-tuned as time progresses and needs are discovered, according to Corps organizers. “This is the first step in starting out an organization that will make a huge difference to veterans, the university and the community,” John Wilson, veteran work-study, said.

The officers elected are students; no faculty was available at the time of the election. Corps President is Alexander (Alex) Stanley. “I would really like to lead this organization into a very positive direction of community involvement,” Stanley said.

The Vice-President elected is Shawn Healey. The offices of the Secretary and the Treasurer were combined as part of the initial Corps start-up. “We really will not have much money to deal with yet, if need be, we will open a separate office later,” Wilson said. Breanna Robinson is the elected student to cover the two positions.

The meeting also discussed other areas of student veteran importance. “It is imperative that every veteran sees me, with their schedules, if they are planning on summer and fall enrollment.

It is our responsibility to get the word out to all of the WVU Parkersburg veterans,” Wilson said.

“I want every veteran to get all of the VA benefits for which they are entitled. Like I always say, ‘Freedom is never free',” Wilson said.

BOG Hosts “Congratulatory” Meeting 4-12-2011

Sometimes no news is good news. At the WVU Parkersburg Board of Governors meeting held on March 30, the mood was more congratulatory than news making. The items presented at short meeting were ones which all can agree on and enjoy.

After roll call, there was nothing for the chairman’s report, nor was there need for an executive session. The minutes from the February 9 meeting were then approved. There were no committee reports to be submitted.

Under informational items, Dr. Rhonda Tracy, senior vice president for academic affairs, reported on several applications for sabbatical leave. Rose Beebe, chairperson of the Health Sciences Division, was granted leave for the spring 2012 semester to complete doctoral dissertation research. The idea of having a doctoral prepared nursing faculty member is being viewed by the Board as both a benefit for Ms. Beebe and the college. She will return to the college for the fall 2012 semester.

Dr. Tracy also reported on Dr. Ed Crisp, who was on sabbatical during the fall 2010 semester. Dr. Crisp’s sabbatical has recently produced two online courses, as well as a manual, which hopefully will be published. After reviewing his sabbatical report, President Dr. Marie Foster Gnage and Dr. Tracy reported that they were both impressed by Dr. Crisp’s achievements.

Dr. Tracy also noted the approval of two honorary designations of faculty staff to emeritus status. Recent retiree Dr. Martha McGovern, who still continues to teach as an adjunct, was awarded the title of Associate Professor of Reading Emerita. Jane King, who will retire at the end of the current academic year, was awarded the title of Associate Professor of Biology and Chemistry Emerita.

President Gnage was pleased to inform the Board that Connie Dziagwa has been awarded administrative and professional staff emeritus. President Gnage personally thanked Connie for her years of commitment and hard work at the college, and jokingly added that she was in hopes that Connie would be back volunteering to help out in the near future. A round of applause followed.

The Board then discussed three items. One of the items dealt with a revision regarding the requirements to give advanced placement to those in the licensed practical nurse program. LPN applicants, who can demonstrate competency in first semester material, will now be allowed to skip to the second semester study. The Board also noted proposed revisions to rules regarding the college’s salary policy. The aforementioned honorary degrees were the third part of the consent agenda.

The next Board of Governors meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 11, at 5:45 p.m.

Facebooking Can Lead to Love 4-12-2011

“I’ve never met anyone that makes me feel the way she does,” explains 22-year-old student, Alikka Stephens. He further elaborates on his story by telling how he and the “love of his life,” Sarah Allen, met.

It was spring of 2010 and Alikka had been having the time of his life, as he had just been released from the bonds of servitude at his mother’s house. After moving in with some friends in an apartment, the search for work proved to be more difficult than he had imagined.

After many dead ends, he finally found employment at the Parkersburg News and Sentinel. Shortly after that, he acquired a Ford Mustang that he and his grandfather had been working on for the past few months. All he needed was a lady in his life and everything would be “copacetic.”

It wasn’t until a few weeks later that he would find his potential soul mate. They met each other on Facebook.

“At first, I was a little scared about meeting him, but shortly after, I was so glad I did. He is such a good guy,” said Sarah while flashing Alikka a playful smile.

“I know, right?” her partner interrupted. “I was kind of scared that she might be an axe murderer or something,” he joked. “But, in all seriousness, it is probably the best decision I’ve ever made.”

They decided to meet at a mutual friend’s house. “I felt like it was love at first sight,” said Sarah dreamily gazing at her man. He couldn’t help but to smile and gave her a big kiss.

All summer long they went on crazy adventures, whether it was in town or in its’ rural surroundings. Taking romantic strolls through some of the local parks, such as Mountwood and North Bend. When they’re not enjoying nature, the two lovebirds often watch movies together, as they both pride themselves as being “movie buffs.”

After nearly a year of dating, they decided to take their relationship to the next level and moved in together. Shortly afterward, Alikka got into a bit of trouble and had to serve one full day of jail time after crashing his Mustang into a number of parked cars. While away on his “vacation,” Alikka was let go from the Parkersburg News and Sentinel and forced to look for other work.

It was around this time that Sarah talked him into going to college to make his search for work easier. “I was unsure about it at first but, the more she tried to convince me, the better the idea sounded. I don’t know where I would be if it wasn’t for her. She takes really good care of me, if you know what I mean,” he said with a wink. Sarah did not hesitate to slug him in the arm, and then they both giggled.

While Alikka is planning to get his Master’s degree in psychology, Sarah is getting her Bachelor’s degree in accounting. “We make an excellent team,” claimed Sarah. “We have some of the same classes together which is super helpful for when I need a study partner.” “And she usually does,” Alikka laughed. Although Sarah obviously did not find this nearly as funny as he did.

“Everyone says that living together really tests the strength of the relationship but we haven’t had any problems yet. I think that means that we are meant for each other,” Alikka explained. “The only real issue we have had with each other is deciding which movies to watch in our down time.”

The promise ring on Sarah’s finger raises the question of marriage. “Not anytime too soon,” Alikka quickly replied. “While we are both very much in love, we are not in a rush to get hitched.” “Yeah,” Sarah agreed, “It will probably be after school, when we are both financially stable and can afford the perfect wedding.” A look of excitement rolled over her face as she explained their plan. “And we definitely plan on having some kids,” she said.

These lovebirds have a long and arduous journey ahead of them but, they reassure their friends and families that true love will prevail. “I’m so excited to spend the rest of my life with her. She is the girl of my dreams and nothing will ever change that,” Alikka said, as Sarah gave him a look inferring mutual agreement

Relationship Blooms From Friendship 4-12-2011

Who says a Sagittarius and a Leo isn’t compatible? Just ask Shayna Brooks and Josh Burns and they will have a love story to show that these signs are very right for each other.

Shanya is the oldest of three. Brooks currently works as a retail part-time manager at Charlotte Rousse.

Burns is the youngest of three children of Bernice and Charlie Burns of St.Marys, W,Va. Burns is a transporter at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital and is head of a Chemical Response team.

Shayna and Burns first met at the Marietta Brewery a few years ago. As they both recall; their first meeting was very lack luster and could have been easily forgotten. Burns described it by saying,“All I can remember is Shaya wasn’t talking to me at all when I first met her and honestly that drew me towards her even more. That is the main reason why I stayed in contact with her afterwards.”

After the two first met, both ended up moving away from the area. Burns moved to Concord to attend college while Brooks moved to Tennessee with family. The two would describe their contact with each other during this time as “friends touching base.”

When the two of them returned to the Parkersburg area, fate came into play. They describe their reuniting as purely coincidence. Burns said “I wasn’t even aware that she was back in town until I was in the mall and a buddy of mine pointed her out. I knew I had to go in and talk to her and we were dating shortly after.” The two have been dating for two years this April. Or, as Brooks put it, “two years and three days.”

Brooks has attended classes on and off at WVU Parkersburg for the past three semesters as a business major. When asked if she will continue studies here she replied, “I like the college experience but I think it is going to be easier for me to finish my college with online courses. I still intend to take those courses through WVU Parkersburg.”

Burns has attended WVU Parkersburg and Concord University. He only needs three classes to complete his Associate’s in Arts degree. When asked about his college experience Burns described it as “a great experience”. He also had great things to say about WVU Parkersburg “WVU Parkersburg is probably the best place for college that someone in this area can attend. I have studied at Concord and the difference is basically the time the instructors have to help students..” He went on to add, “Most teachers there (Concord) had classes of a hundred or more students, while here teachers have much more opportunities to help.”

The two of them have also taken a class together here, medical terminology. Brooks said “It was great taking a class with Josh. It was so much easier to have someone there at all times helping me at the college and at home. I enjoyed the time we spent studying.”

Burns gives advice to students now, “Just take one day at a time. If you don’t, you'll never get anywhere.”

The couple enjoys their time together. Since they have recently moved into a home together in Vienna, W.Va.

They enjoy long walks to the river, watching movies on their days off and many other activities. Burns describes the time they spend together, “We do everything together honestly. If I’m going golfing, Shanya is usually with me. If I am going to visit friends, she is right there with me. We do everything together.”

Although the young couple are still a “work in progress” as described by Burns, they are very happy with each other. “I enjoy every memory we make together and hopefully there will be many more,” Brooks said.

When asked about marriage as a possible future plan Brooks simply said with a smile, “It’s all up to him.”

Burns also spoke freely on advice for couples, “I think the biggest thing that breaks up couples is patience. It's so easy to just get mad about something on the spot, but if you take the time to be patient and calm down you’ll see that having an argument really wasn’t the answer to the problem.”

When questioned about the couple’s ability to juggle school, work and their personal life Burns said, “It’s kind of a hassle trying to juggle all of these things but it’s totally worth it.” Brooks also added with a laugh, “I sometimes get frustrated but when I get home and relax, I also can see that everything we are doing is worth it. So, like usual, I’m agreeing with Josh.”

College Proves Difficult for Newlyweds 4-12-2011

College students don’t always see their lives as being full of excitement. Choosing between good grades, getting enough sleep and having a social life can often make students feel like they can’t have it all. With the constant classes, exams and stresses, having a normal life can seem difficult.

For college student Lindsey Knost and her now husband, Joe Lynch, the stresses became much more intense after deciding to get married to each other in May 2010.

Joe and Lindsey met when they both worked as managers together at the same restaurant. The two hit it off immediately and it didn’t take them long to get married. Now, the pair shares a home in Williamstown, W. Va. with their two pugs.

Lindsey has been going to WVU Parkersburg since the fall of 2010 and her new husband took on the responsibility of paying the tuition.

The couple manages their life well. Both partners have jobs and Lindsey, of course is often busy with schoolwork. They admit having more free time to be with each other would be nice, but still save time for each other every day to sit with on the couch to watch their favorite movies and television shows.

Lindsey originally went to Ohio Valley University for her first year of college. After tuition became too much to handle, she made the choice to come to WVU Parkersburg. She said, “OVU was a much more hands-on college and the counselors are there to help guide you through the entire process of getting your degree. It’s not like that at WVUP. You’re expected to do everything on your own. But I understand it, OVU is a private college, so it’ much easier for that one-on-one experience.”

“There are certainly things I don’t like about WVUP, but overall it has made a positive impact on my life. Because of the low tuition rates and the fact that campus is close to home, I’m able to live a much happier life with my new husband.”

Because of her current job as a Pharmacy Technician, Lindsey takes only six hours a semester. She is taking two online classes now and hopes to graduate in 2013 with a Marketing degree. She is aware marketing and Pharmacy are two completely different categories, but enjoys her job and is able to make a decent living while attaining her dream.

When asked what she kind of job she would like to have after she graduates, Joe answered jokingly for her, “a housewife.” Lindsey then quickly corrected him by saying she’d like to work in advertising for a local company.

Joe works at Suddenlink as a customer service representative. He is happy to pay for his wife’s education. He smiles at the mention of him paying the tuition.

When they do have spare time, they love to walk their dogs, watch the television show and “House.” The couple is also very active in church.

The couple attends Lynn Street church of Christ where they help out with church functions and those in need. Giving back to the community helps the Lynch’s find a balance in their lives.
“You feel like you're a part of something bigger than yourself when you're able to help people. It really is a great feeling and we just love spending time with our church family.”

It became obvious within the first few minutes of talking with the couple that they are truly in love with one another. Joe would often stroke Lindsey’s hair as she was speaking and share the occasional loving glance. After being married almost a year, the two still seem to be off on their honeymoon.

With many couples, the reality of marriage sets in as soon as the reception is over and the guests go home. Although the couples have their troubles at times (their car had broke down a few days prior), they make no mention of being angry or getting into fights with one another.

Most people begin looking for love early in life and are lucky enough to find it. Others give up looking all together and end up finding exactly what they were not expecting to find.

When Kelli, a recent graduate of WVU Parkersburg, and Joel Gutierrez, a current student at the college, met in 2008, Joel’s brother Jesse was about to leave to work in Iraq.

As many were gathering to see him off on his journey, a silent connection was happening.

“I was not looking for anything long term,” Kelli said.

“Neither was I,” added Joel.

But in typical fashion, when people are not looking for love, it finds them.

Kelli was a single mom at the time, trying to support and raise her son, Alec. Joel was living in Chicago, working full-time and doing pretty well for a young guy.

But on that fateful night, something happened that would change their lives forever. Their long-distance relationship began.

Joel left shortly after the party to return to Chicago, but the connection that they made that night continued.

Long-distance relationships are not easy ones to maintain, but Kelli and Joel made it look simple.

“We talked as much as we could,” Joel said. “But we were expecting nothing to come of it at the time,” added Kelli. From sun up to sun down they were texting, talking and whatever other communication method they could use to keep in touch.

Joel would often come to West Virginia to visit and Kelli made the venture to Chicago to keep this relationship going.

But the traveling began to take its toll on both Kelli and Joel. During a call one day, Joel threw out a thought he had. He felt it was time to make the move to West Virginia and bring some stability to this relationship. Joel gave up a great job and the majority of his family to be near Kelli. “It was all about her,” Joel said about his decision.

But this move was not easy on him. He had left a comfortable paycheck in Chicago and was having a difficult time adjusting to West Virginia. But he stayed because of Kelli, and settling down was what he was prepared to do.

About six months after his move, Joel thought he was ready to propose. One evening after everything had settled down, Joel did what most men fear and asked Kelli for her hand in marriage. It was not the grand gesture of which most women dream. Yet it was simple and heartfelt, matching the nature of their relationship.

After the initial shock wore off, Kelli responded with a "yes," and they were off to share the news with Kelli’s son Alec.

But much to Kelli’s amazement, Joel asked Alec for permission to marry his mom. In which Alec respond with an enthusiastic "yes" to match his mom’s response.

Soon, a wedding was planned and Kelli and Joel were married on August 7, 2010. But that is not the end of their love story. Kelli and Joel share a love that most would want. But love is not always easy.

“We struggle sometimes to find our balance,” Kelli said.

But for the Gutierrez family, each day is filled with love and laughter, mixed in with some arguing and reasoning.

“We are still getting to know each other,” Joel said. “There are some days where moving back to Chicago seems like the right thing to do,” he continued.

But due to the love and support of his wife, he knows their love will persevere.

To Joel, the loving and understanding nature of his wife keeps him grounded. “She is an amazingly fun, open, and creative person," Joel added.

For Kelli, it is the big heart and Joel’s devotion to making her and Alec’s life a great one that keeps her going each day.

“He is patient, romantic, and a complete spoiler,” Kelli said as she described her husband.

In the end, love is all anyone is looking for and Kelli and Joel Gutierrez seem to have found it. Taking it one day at a time, this couple is finding what it takes to keep the balance between family, love and life. Kelli and Joel still have many chapters to write in their love story.

James and Cari's Love Endures Hectic Schedule 4-12-2011

You can’t tell Cari and James Talarico that love at first sight doesn’t exist. These two lovebirds debunked that theory.

Cari met James through her sister who was also her roommate at the time. “He was sweet, we were friends right off of the bat, then we became best friends. We started dating after two weeks of knowing each other! It scared the crap out of me when he told me he loved me, but I knew I loved him back after he volunteered to watch my sisters’ kids so that my sister and I could go to a concert together. He is such a sweetheart!”

According to Cari, after making James wait for the return “I love you,” he didn’t even know how to reply when she finally uttered those words! The Talarico’s eloped after a little over six months of being together. This adventurous, spontaneous duo will have their 11th marriage anniversary this August, but they have been together for almost 12 years. Being parents of five children, that gives them little time to reminisce and celebrate their anniversary. They have two girls, 11 and 10 years old, and three boys, 8, 6 and 4 years old.

“You know you’re in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams,” says Dr. Seuss. Well, sometimes in her dreams is the only time Cari gets to see her husband, or right before bed. Both Cari and James are full-time students and full-time parents. “When we’re not working on homework or helping with our kids’ homework, going to church, soccer or karate night, we try to spend time with each other as long as we’re not completely exhausted!” Schedule discrepancies are understood between the couple, and they spend as much time together as they can with their hectic agendas.

Cari and James do just about everything together. They are both currently active in their church. The two have a true appreciation for nature and the outdoors. They go rock climbing and hiking, horseback riding, they attended rodeos and they have volunteered for Habitat For Humanity. They also participated in an organized peace rally for a local fallen soldier this past fall. The Talaricos do just about everything together.

She had only one minimal complaint about her husband, and she takes it in stride. “It drives me nuts when he tells me I should have made a list! I'm very laid back, and a fly by the seat of my pants type of person. He’s more organized. It drives him crazy that I’m not sometimes!” Colin Raye says, “I laugh, I love, I hope, I try I hurt, I need, I fear, I cry. And I know you do the same things too, So we're really not that different, me and you.” Cari and James learn to take their differences in stride, and understand that they are actually a lot alike, even in their differences.

Plenty of people are pondering how to get a relationship to survive these days, especially when the media illustrates so many failed relationships? Cari has a “life is too short” mentality pertaining to love and life. “Laughter is a big part of our relationship. We’re just big goof balls. We try not to take things (and each other) so seriously. You have to be able to laugh at and with each other. We are good enough friends to be honest with each other but still be light-hearted about things.”

Even for those who aren’t completely familiar or don't follow the Bible, this quote from 1 Corinthians 13:4 may ring a bell: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” The Talarico’s faith in God is a big contributing factor to the success of their relationship. The couple shares ideas, views, and worship. “Our faith and God is #1 in our lives. Both have always been very important to us and is definitely something we have in common.”

While maintaining their own relationship, they maintain one with God also, which in turn helps maintain theirs. They both head leadership programs at their church.

Education and extra-curricular activities are extremely important to the Talarico family and their children. “Before anything else, we are parents. We want our children to know the value of a good education, so we make sure one of both of us are there to help them with homework and answer any questions they may have.”

Cari says that they haven’t had cable television for over six years because they manage to stay busy doing other things. “We don’t miss it, and what’s the point? We’re too busy to watch TV anyway! We don't know what to do with ourselves if our schedule isn’t full every day.”

She admits that while she is a major advocate for her children and their education, snow days are a relief from what can be a grueling schedule with five children. The Talarico kids are involved in an array of activities such as soccer, karate, and school and church programs. Cari was a professional photographer for 11 years, so she has been able to capture lots of memories with her husband and kids.

Unquestionable love, God, their similarities and differences, and their mutual love for their children nurture Cari and James Talarico’s relationship. Some may find it comforting to know that love can still exist and exist extensively, even for people with hectic schedules. When it seems like there is no time in the day to even think about love, these two have learned not to take for granted what little time they have, and enjoy each other and their lives to the fullest. In the words of John Lennon, “Love is a promise, love is a souvenir, once given never forgotten, never let it disappear.”

It's Their Turn to Learn: Dziagwa Joins Husband in Retirement After Three Decades of Touching Student's' Lives 4-12-2011

Connie Dziagwa has been a lady with two life-long affairs. Two love affairs, to be exact. While for some celebrities no extreme would be too great to protect them from gossip regarding their steamy interludes; Dziagwa has let her double romance be quite public, in fact one of her loves has demanded it.

Of course, it’s her role as Executive Director of Institutional Advancement at WVU Parkersburg, which has demanded an open relationship. Soon Dziagwa will be stepping away from this long and fruitful affair, but her love of WVU Parkersburg and the people it serves will continue to be a flame in her heart. “My intent has always been to leave here still loving what I do, and that’s what I’m doing,” Dziagwa said.

Now to be fair, her other affair began several years before her relationship with WVU Parkersburg, as many do, in the wondrous years of college. Born and raised in Ironton, Ohio, it was a fairly obvious choice for Connie to attend Marshall University in nearby Huntington, W.Va. Her course of study was also fairly easy to choose, given the fact that her father was the editor of the Herald Dispatch and the Ironton Tribune. “I come by my background quite easily; I went to Marshall and majored in journalism,” Dziagwa said. She worked an internship at WSAZ-TV as part of her studies at Marshall. But a degree and work experience weren’t the only things with which she left Huntington.

We all remember the old saying about all work and no play, and it seems that some of Connie’s friends knew that saying, too. They urged her to socialize and meet new people from different places, which is all an important part of the college dynamic. Mutual friends introduced her to Bill, the man whom she would marry. Now every relationship always has at least a split second of twists and turns, and theirs was no exception. “Let’s just say that my wife (to be) was in a sorority with one of my best buddy’s girlfriends, and it just so happened that we all got together at the same location, and frankly I was doing my best to put my best moves on one of her sorority sisters and my wife (to be) felt I was being a bit foolish,” a chuckling Bill Dziagwa admits. (Ladies take note at this point, for it is one of the mysteries of man. It’s as old as the hills; a man sometimes requires rejection to truly see the best things for him.) The two students arranged to get together and talk the next night, which was followed by dating regularly, and as they say … the rest is history.

As the couple wrapped up their college careers, they were happily married and moved to Parkersburg. Did it take any coaxing to get Connie to relocate to the Mid-Ohio Valley? “No, not really,” Bill reminisced. As the two began their new life together in Bill’s hometown, Connie put her journalism degree to work, and began reporting in the local media. “I worked at the Parkersburg Sentinel for five years, and I was the educational reporter so I covered the college as part of my beat,” Connie says. At that time WVU Parkersburg was known as Parkersburg Community College, and through her reporting, Connie was becoming very familiar with the institution. After her stint writing for the Sentinel, Connie had the opportunity to start her career at PCC. She was hired as the college’s communication specialist in 1979. It was Connie’s first title of eight while, working at WVU Parkersburg under four college presidents over 32 years. Connie replaced the college’s original director of public information, Peggy Kessinger, who was retiring after 15 years of service.

Bill was busy putting his education degree to use teaching at Parkersburg High School. While teaching at PHS, Bill was also involved in coaching girls’ basketball at Parkersburg Catholic High School. During that time they won several state championships and broke state records. The two newlyweds were beginning a journey that would help to shape the face of education in the area. But both are far too humble to lay claim to any personal achievements; the Dziagwa’s would be team players both at work and at home.

As Connie began her new position as communication specialist, she was excited to take on new tasks over the years as her job description began to grow. These tasks revolved around the growth of the college’s offerings, plus how to communicate these important changes to the area. “When I first started working here, there was no internet, the college’s first fax machine used thermal paper and was in my office,” Connie said. Not only did she have changing technologies to address, but the amount of information kept growing to meet people’s needs, leading to more responsibilities in how the college can effectively communicate its opportunities to the public. “We used to print 28,000 copies of the schedule every fall and mail them to out to area residents, and now there is no printed copy of the schedule. It’s all online,” Connie said. “The instantaneousness of being able to be in touch with media has revolutionized how we do the business,” she added.

As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of WVU Parkersburg, it is evident that numerous changes have occurred at the college, some quietly and others much heralded. “I think what would overshadow everything would be 1989, when we became a regional campus of WVU. That changed the direction of the college. Up until that point we were known as a very good community college, but when we became part of WVU that gave us the opportunity to start offering baccalaureate degrees here that were our degrees, and it changed everything about the college,” Connie proudly said. Changing the name of the college was a also a major undertaking, and one of the single most important factors of the new partnership. “The community was so excited about the relationship, that enrollment jumped by 15 percent that fall,” Dziagwa said. Connie quickly down plays her role in creating this buzz, but it was historically important, be a humble communication specialist or not!

One of Connie’s toughest challenges occurred in 2008, when legislation was passed that changed the college’s relationship with WVU. Explaining those changes to students and the community required a special finesse to guarantee that everyone understood exactly how the relationship had changed. The community needed to understand that programs and quality of education were not going to be compromised. One point was making sure that residents understood that our baccalaureate degrees were solely WVU Parkersburg’s, and not merely offered in conjunction with WVU. The task even utilized surveys as to whether or not students and the community felt the college’s name should be changed. “Our relationship was changing with WVU, but we were going to continue a relationship with them,” Dziagwa said.

Bill's relationship with professional education was also changing. After a teaching career that included time spent teaching at PHS and Warren High School, where Bill also helped coach several athletic teams, he retired in 2010. “One of our keys to success in our marriage, is that we were always supportive of one another, pursuing either career that we both have. I was involved in coaching and when you coach you’re away from home quite a bit, and she was one of the most supportive wives you could have,” Bill said. “If either one of had to do our careers over again, we would have done the same thing. I have no regrets and neither does my wife,” he added. The couple both view themselves as supporters to one another, both sporting a daily positive attitude and maintaining an optimistic view. “We both understand public education, of course, so there certainly was an understanding and empathy for what each of us did,” Connie added.

It is evident that a major joy of the Dziagwas careers has been the ability to touch students’ lives. “When you have individual students that achieve something or say something to you, it kind of all makes it worthwhile,” Bill explained. Reaching and communicating with students has been a driving force for their past 30 years.

Of course all this talk of retirement leads one to be inquisitive about future plans of the Dziagwas. Connie is enjoying genealogy, and has always enjoyed music, and is looking forward to the opportunity to play different instruments in her upcoming free time. “I always remember singing and playing the piano, and later on the guitar. It’s just something I have always done. I’m the oldest of four children and we all grew up with an appreciation for music,” Connie said. Even today her mother enjoys singing and playing the piano.

When asked what the couple will share together as they move into retirement, Bill quickly replies, “travel and golf.” Connie adds,” He loves to golf and that may be something … that I need to get a little bit better at.” The couple also enjoys walking together, after years involved in running.

After nearly 40 years of marriage is there anything left for the Dziagwas to discover about one another? When asked about his wife’s preference on a Netburger, “mustard and cheese,” Bill ponders. Hmmm … close but it’s a “small Netcheeseburger with mustard and pickle,” Connie said. She adds that Joe Roedersheimer, long-time part owner of the North End Tavern, was one of the friends who introduced them at Marshall.

All of us here at the Chronicle staff wish Connie and Bill a long, happy retirement together. Just don’t forget the pickle Bill!

Being a Couple 4-12-2011

Initially getting together is often relatively simple. Some couples start out as a result of a chance encounter; while for others it may have taken weeks before the courage was found to ask the other out. In some instances the relationship may blossom from the roots of a friendship, while others speak of experiencing “love at first sight”. Regardless of how a relationship begins, the transformation into “being a couple” is a process that involves personal attention.

The foundation of a stable and long-term relationship begins with identifying those core values that are shared. Building the relationship requires the infusion of respect and dignity and a support of individuality while simultaneously making deliberate decisions to share experiences that can ultimately create a unique history that serves to strengthen and form two individuals into a “couple’.

Being a couple is not always easy. It is important to understand that all couples can encounter challenging episodes that test the ultimate maturity of the relationship. These seemingly negative experiences can actually result in a source of growth if both persons are willing to endure the discomfort and make the effort to address the issues. In some instances the situation may require support from someone outside of the relationship, such as a counselor.

The personal value of the relationship will determine the degree to which each person will invest in being a couple. Couples who are experiencing a healthy relationship find value in being with each other as together they generally feel stronger, happier, and more at peace.

A Blind Date Results in Lifelong Love 4-12-2011

A light flickers above; dry leaves rustle through the winding wing that is long like a banana. A trip to the end reveals a tiny office stacked to the ceiling with volumes of history. In this office resides a man that is local to West Virginia, Professor Aaron Crites.

When Crites first received his license, his parents asked him to go to the market for an errand, “I never stopped driving since,” Crites tells his West Virginia history class. Like most West Virginian teens, he just wanted to see the world.

Professor Aaron Crites grew up in Mineral Wells. After graduating in 1992, Crites attended Alderson-Broaddus College where he managed to take a class overseas in Salzburg, Austria.

While in Austria, Crites stayed in an apartment where he was able to come and go as he pleased. His hunger for the outside was slowly being filled.

He studied political science, sociology and European history, three prestigious majors that barely filled his cravings for knowledge. He received his teaching certification at Ohio Valley University and immediately started substitute teaching.

Then, one snowy day in January, the phone rang. Recovering from surgery and taking a hard dose of video games for cure, Crites was home to answer.

“Are you seeing anybody?” a woman asks him, with that devious under-tone that every single person recognizes when they hear that question.

“Well, no,” he answered unsure of himself, but he allowed the date to be made.

The first date, a double date with his life-long friend at a bowling alley, and Crites knew his life would never be the same.

Despite their brief courtship, Crites and his new partner were married at the Trinity Episcopal Church just nine months after beginning their courtship. “I knew it was love because I was able to write love poetry for the first time,” Crites commented, “Everything just kinda worked out the way it was supposed to.”

After marriage, his first teaching job was for behavioral disability and special education as a substitute. When in charge of children, he uses a stern demeanor to keep them in line. “Most kids that are labeled ‘bad’ just have a bad situation that they come from,” Crites comments. Teaching these kids just requires extreme patience and alpha male status. Today, he uses that same demeanor teaching at WVU Parkersburg in the Social Sciences Division.

While her husband is teaching, Cheryl spends her time working as an administrative assistant. Crites has an understanding of her work and often they solve problems together. This partnership has strengthened over the years and they operate as a team.

They do have their differences, which serve as reminders of their individuality. For example, Aaron is always up late at night, but Cheryl gets up early in the morning. Aaron has a loud, outgoing personality, while Cheryl tends to be more withdrawn and shy.

They both share a love, and really it's an addiction, to coffee. They spend a lot of time in the car listening to music. Crites always has a plan for where he is going, and every year the couple book a trip to Las Vegas.

On one such occasion, Crites had been secretly saving money to buy Cheryl a purse, but when they managed to make it to the Louis Vuitton store, the clerk snubbed them. He spends his time trying to not look out of place while she inspects the purses. Much to the surprise of his wife, and the man behind the counter he threw the $1200, in cash, down on the counter. A West Virginia wins for us all.

Similarly, Aaron shows his love in unique ways and is always keeping Cheryl on her toes. The kitchen is dark, and in the doorway stands Aaron holding a frosted cake with flickering candles on it. He clears his throat, in common fashion, before beginning the song he has promised Cheryl to sing for this special day. He begins singing a cappella, but instead of the familiar “Happy Birthday to you,” he begins with an, “The old gray mare…” His practical jokes serve as tokens of love for special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, and sometimes-even Mondays.

The couple shares the Alstroemeria as a flower. When they were married they chose the Alstroemeria because it would be of little cost to the church that offered to provide them. Also known as the ‘Lily of the Incas,’ the Alstroemeria is a cheap flower that has a twisting stem said to represent the twisting and turning of human relationships. Although once selected based on cost, the Alstroemeria is now Crites’ first choice because the flower has special meaning.

The secret to making a relationship work seems to be teamwork. If one can find a teammate, not just a husband or wife, then life will be easier and more fulfilling.

Love Lasts Over the Years 4-12-2011

It begins like any other good love story – boy meets girl. She was a slight, pretty curly-haired twelve-year-old girl. John was a tall, gangly thirteen year-old with a knack for sports and an eye for one certain girl. It didn’t take long before these two became inseparable; not much has changed since. Sixty-four years later, John and JoAnn Hefner are still together.

“I let him chase me until I let him catch me,” JoAnn said as she teased John about how they ended up being a couple. John smiles and says that he is “just lucky to have her.” John and JoAnne grew up in Cedar Grove and still reside there to this day.

“I can remember going over to her house after school and having to walk home late at night – it was completely dark out. I always just hoped to sneak back into the house before mother noticed I was gone,” John said, “We spent all of our time together. One winter, we just had gobs of snow and Jo had the perfect sled. My, it was a beautiful sled. A buddy and me took off riding it and crashed it into a tree; that thing split into a million pieces – we really mangled that thing. I told her that I would buy her a new one, but I guess I never did.”

True Big Reds through and through, John and JoAnn are both graduates from Parkersburg High School and both were highly active in sports. “I was in the GAA (Girls Athletic Association) and monitored an eighth grade boys’ gym class. I taught them how to climb ropes and everything,” she said. John was an All-American baseball player, a prominent member of the football team and the quarterback of the 1952 North/South Game.

“After I graduated, I thought about attending Fairmont. However, once I got there, I saw all these grammatical and spelling errors on their entrance papers – and I pointed them out. For some reason, it just wasn’t the school for me,” JoAnn said with sarcasm in her voice.

John played basketball for Salem University and the University of Charleston, but his draft number for the military was coming up quick. To avoid an unfortunate draft, John enlisted in the United States Air Force. Before John deployed, he and JoAnn were married. They then moved to Illinois where John was stationed. There, they had their first child, a daughter named Suzanne.

As is military custom, John was transferred to a base in San Antonio, Texas. While being stationed in Texas, John was riding on the back of a truck on base. The driver was speeding through the base and an unexpected curve caught him by surprise. Unable to handle the curve, John was thrown from the back of the truck and proceeded to roll head over heels multiple times. Although on the outside he looked fine, John had suffered severe brain trauma. He was whisked off to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in New York. “I had to go with him, but I couldn’t take care of both him and Suzanne. I had to send her home to stay with her grandmother while I stayed in New York tending to John. That was really hard,” JoAnn said.

With the severe brain damage, the doctors didn’t think he would recover, but love has a way of healing things. “The doctors didn’t even think he would make it, one of his surgeons even sewed a needle up in his head thinking that it wouldn’t matter either way,” JoAnn said. While John was there, JoAnn was like a surrogate mother to all the injured soldiers. “The hospital would host movies and every time there was a show, I would line all the men up in their wheelchairs by the elevator. I would take them down two by two until everyone was situated.”

Once John was discharged from the Air Force with an honorable discharge, the pair returned to Parkersburg and their daughter who was then 18 months old. Although, they were home, things were still rough. “I can remember sitting on the floor, crying and feeling so overwhelmed by the amount of pills I had to make sure were organized for John,” JoAnn said. “I certainly couldn’t have done it without her,” he said.

John was not a quitter and went back to school to support his family. He graduated from Parkersburg Community College and started work at Shell Chemical. He and JoAnn had their second and final child, a boy named after his father.

Now, John helps JoAnn as she is recovering from two open-heart surgeries within two months. “I promised that I would be there through all of it, and that I wouldn’t leave her side,” he said. He held true to his promise, and both are still living in Cedar Grove.

Now, the couple travel, spend time with their grandchildren and just take life one day at a time. So, their story ends as any good love story does – a man and a woman, growing old together and still being in love.

CJO to Visit Virginia Beach 4-12-2011

This spring looks to be great for at least some students at WVU Parkersburg. The Criminal Justice Organization is going to be able to go to Virginia Beach this spring thanks to the Harlem Rockets game hosted on March 26.

Drew Kafeli, president of the Criminal Justice Organization, explained, “The game went great. I think everyone had a lot of fun.”

Kafelli went on to say “All of the kids that wanted autographs got one. We didn't win, but Parkersburg Mayor Bob Newell had to be my MVP, because he went beyond his duty diving for loose balls.”

Not only was the game fun overall but also Kafeli spoke about meeting some goals with the attendance “We had 898 people show up and close to a 1,000 tickets sold.”

Not only was the actual game a success, but also some of the minor fundraisers such as the CJO hot dog sale were too. Kafelli said that around $150 dollars was raised during the hot dog sale.

As far as what the future will bring for the Criminal Justice Organization, Kafelli spoke about up coming events.

On April 9, during the Easter parade held on Market Street in Parkersburg, the CJO members will be taking part in the parade. The organization is considering designing a float but Kafelli said, “We probably will just have a banner and throw some candy out.”

Also on May 1, Corinna Moore, member of the Criminal Justice Organization, will be participatin in the walk for Multiple Sclerosis. Anyone who wishes to sponsor Moore can either contact her personally or see Drew Kafelli or any other members of the Criminal Justice Office.

On April 15, the CJO will be hosting an award dinner. Not only will members of the organization, family, and friends weukk be attending, but Mayor Bob Newell and Dr. Marie Foster-Gnage the president of WVU Parkersburg will also be present.

Curtis, Bonnie Richards Love at First Sight 4-12-2011

It was not much of a homecoming when Curtis Richards left the military and returned to Doddridge County, W.Va. His home had really never given him much more than heartache and hunger after the passing of his mother; but it was still far better than military life.

“The military was not the life for me, but I should have planned a little better before I left,” he said. As he sat in the house, debating where he would look for work, a knock at the door would change his life.

The girl at the door was an older member of the local Girl Scouts, out selling cookies door to door. Curt recognized her as Earlene Yvonne Tuttle, Bonnie to all who knew her, a pretty young girl from down the road. Trying to hide his attraction to a girl five years younger than he, Curt put on his manliest face and said, “What! I don’t want any of your damn cookies.” Bonnie simply stated, “You don’t have to be rude mister, just don’t buy any then.” Weeks drifted by, Curt could think of nothing more than the look on Bonnie’s face when he snapped at her. “I can still see her face that day, I made her mad, scared her and hurt her feelings all at once, and I felt terrible,” he said. One day, after hours of boredom proved too much, Curt gathered himself up for the walk into the general store or pool hall: the trip that changed everything.

After buying a soda, Curt walked through the front door of the store and bumped directly into Bonnie, spilling his drink all over the floor. Bonnie looked at him and simply grunted, “HUMPH!” as she brushed past him and headed out the door. Curt ran directly after her, apologizing for the mess as he left. “I knew the store clerk, and boy was he mad,” Curt said.

“Excuse me miss,” he yelled as he scampered down the front stairs, “Are you still selling your cookies? I would really like to buy some, if they are not too much.” Bonnie stopped and said, “Mister, we don’t just walk around everywhere carrying our cookies in order to sell them at the drop of a dime,” she stated. Curt responded, “Well, can I walk you home and buy them there?” Their walk, purposely the long way around the hill, gave plenty of opportunity to talk, laugh and plan a first date.

The first few dates allowed Bonnie to see the true softness and big heart inside a guy who the rest of the community only knew as tough and somewhat mean. "I knew he wasn’t really that tough all along,” she said. The two grew close as the months flew by; Curt worked at a turkey farm while Bonnie attended school. “If you ever had to work there, you would always want ham for Thanksgiving dinner,” he said.

The romance led to a marriage on May 9, 1966. Their son Jeff was born in February of 1968. Curt, in an attempt to improve their lifestyle, enrolled and attended Barber College in Huntington while Bonnie stayed home, caring for the household and new son. “

In those days, the trip to and from Huntington was rough, there wasn’t any of these nice four lane highways until later,” he said. Curt would visit on weekends, leaving with heartache again every Sunday.

After graduation, Curt was able to obtain employment in Parkersburg and moved the family to town with him. Soon, Bonnie gave birth to their second child, Sherene - Sherry for short. The expanded family called for a larger house. Curt found a cheap lot in Vienna and built a small house to Bonnie’s standards, of course. Another form of good luck was about to change the small family’s financial status.

While cutting the hair of a local politician, who happened to be a regular in the shop, Curt learned of an opening within the Parkersburg Water Treatment Plant. He left work early and applied for the position, using his customer as a reference. Weeks of testing and interviews prevailed and Curt was hired into the plant as a level one operator.

Life moved along: the children grew as Bonnie stayed home with them, Curt advanced through all of the necessary milestones to eventually become the chief plant operator and the family moved to a 25 - acre mini-farm with nice big brick house.

One evening, while sitting on the front porch, Bonnie said, “Honey, the kids have grown, your job keeps you busy, I would really like to go to college now.” In his typical gruff voice he responded, “If that’s what you want, do it.”

Bonnie enrolled at WVU Parkersburg immediately where she eventually earned a degree in education. After teaching at several different jobs including Adult Basic Education and various substitute locations, Bonnie accepted a position at Jackson Junior High School in Vienna. Bonnie taught for almost nine more years and retired at the same time as Curt.

The couple now spends their days together, spoiling each other, their six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. “Life has been full of all kinds of bumps and turns, but it’s been really great. After all is said and done, we ended up with a pretty great son-in-law, you can print that,” Bonnie said with a smile.

Jackson County Center Offers and Excellent Learning Experience 4-12-2011

The Jackson County Center of WVU Parkersburg (JCC) has been extremely busy with activities and events. New technology, improved comforts and educational presentations have made the campus an excellent learning atmosphere, leading the way for several more activities in April.

The new Community Conference Center has been a valuable tool in classroom and speaking engagements. Students have had the capability to view many guest speakers via the video-conferencing equipment thus saving the hour drive to and from the main campus. The student lobby/multi-purpose area has had some improvements as well.

The WVU Parkersburg Foundation, under the direction of Executive Director Kimberly Jones, has furnished the lobby/multi-purpose area with all new furniture. The improved aesthetics and comfort of the new furniture are intended to increase the use of the area, according to JCC Director John Gorrell. The upgrade in comfort has been ideal for the recent movie nights.

Movie nights, sponsored by the JCC Student Government, have increased some social gathering at the campus. Movies, such as Jeff Bridges’ "True Grit", have been shown on the lobby/multi-purpose area big-screen television free of charge to anyone involved with the JCC. Snacks and other refreshments have been available. Another form of educational entertainment has been in the form of historical presentations.

Mrs. Freda Bradley presented a historic portrayal of Mary Knight, a Jackson County resident during the time of the Civil War. Bradley’s husband, David, portrayed a Union surgeon. The presentation captured the essence of the hardships of life during the trying times of the 1860s. More events, social opportunities and educational experiences are available and scheduled for April.

The statewide Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Conference was recently held on April 8-9. According to the official TESOL Mission Statement, TESOL’s mission is to develop and maintain professional expertise in English language teaching and learning for speakers of other languages.

The American Red Cross will be holding a community blood drive at the JCC from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on April 18. Blood supplies are low nationwide for the upcoming spring and summer months and donation are needed. Another event will allow students to have their voice heard in the month of April. On April 19 the WVU Parkersburg Presidential Cabinet will meet from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Students are invited and will be permitted to interact with the Cabinet during the meeting. Immediately following the cabinet meeting, President Gnage will attend a student ice cream social, where students will be offered more time of social interaction and questioning with the president.

This issue of the Chronicle is chocked full of couples and all the goodness that comes with love. After reading though the articles, a few things stood out in the making of a good relationship.

There are stories of trust, patience, kindness, caring, but mostly there are stories of selflessness and not asking for anything in return.

There is something to be said for a person who is selfless and able to get satisfaction from helping others and serving the world. There’s no doubt that people are becoming more and more selfish as the world progresses. There’s more of a concentration on the “I” rather than the “us.” Part of it probably comes from the loss of community in our society, but part of it lies within the society. Society has lost touch with the “us.”

These stories tell the tales of couples forging lives for themselves from when they were young, taking on the world together – putting an emphasis on the “us.” If one of them needed something, the other took care of it – no questions asked. They didn’t think, “Where will this leave me,” or “What’s in it for me?” They just accepted that once they were in it for better or worse, that’s what it meant.

These people know what “us” means. Somewhere along the way, they’ve become “us.” They function as one and know that they will continue that way. Sometimes, it’s only one person in a relationship who truly understands that meaning of “us.” Unfortunately, it takes two to really make it work.

If everyone were to be a little more selfless, a little more willing to help someone else out, think of all the change that could occur in the world; all the people who could be happier. Hafiz, a middle eastern poet, summed up the idea of taking care of one another perfectly: “Even after all this time, the sun never says to the earth, ‘you owe me.’ Look at what happens with a love like that, it lights up the whole sky.”

Under Construction: Work Continues on New Facilities, Parking Lot Renovation Plan Begins 3-29-2011

The new internet technology center is relocating to the first level.

As the winter weather begins to break and temperatures warm, there will be more than just grass sprouting up at WVU Parkersburg. As reported earlier, several noteworthy projects will begin this spring on the main campus, while work continues to progress on several other ongoing projects. The following is an update on some of those projects.

Work continues on the Internet Technology center move at the WVU Parkersburg main campus. The IT center is relocating to the first level and the new location will provide for a more spacious service area. “The work on the new IT center is about 50% complete,” WVU Parkersburg Facilities and Grounds Director Dave White said. Much of the construction is being self-performed by WVU Parkersburg maintenance personnel, but several parts of the project have been subcontracted. The climate control system for the main server control room and the necessary electrical feeds were subcontracted to outside companies. An outside contractor will also be installing a state-of-the-art fire suppression system in the main server control room.

Plans for the theatre renovation have also cleared several hurdles; school officials have been reviewing architectural specifications and are beginning to select some of the colors and materials, which will be used in the theatre area renovation. Plans call for the project to go out for bid in April, followed by general contractor selection, and work is scheduled to begin on or near May 23. This start date will allow the theatre to still be used as a student staging area for Spring graduation ceremonies. “We really don’t have another space big enough to do that,” White said. The job will hopefully be completed before the beginning of the fall 2011 semester.

The Applied Technology Center and the Child Development Center will be going out for bid in early April. General contractors will have approximately a month to calculate and submit their bids. A ceremonial ground breaking will take place this spring, followed by the placement of signs displaying project information. The actual work on the two structures is expected to get underway in early June. Realistically the ATC may be ready for use for the fall 2012 semester.

Workers are also busy at the new WVU Parkersburg downtown campus. Work on the building’s electrical system upgrade is nearly complete. The completion of the electrical work will allow for the elevator installation to begin within the next several weeks. Work is also continuing on the building’s façade, with new windows and louvers already installed on the second-story level, and the windows, doors and other building materials for the ground floor having been ordered. The brick facing on the second story of the building has been acid pressure washed and any faults in the brick have been repaired. A new roof for the building is out for bid, and once awarded, a new roof should be in place by July. At that point, work can move forward on the interior room construction.

By virtue of the downtown Parkersburg project, the college is now “involved with sustainability and renovating an almost hundred-year-old structure,” White said. White has been invited to attend a national conference, which deals with the Environmental Protection Agency's Brownfield’s program, which partially aims to revitalize existing structures and therefore reduce a project's environmental impact.

Several small jobs have also been completed at the WVU Parkersburg Jackson County campus. These improvements include the repaving and restriping of the parking lot, the construction of a new mathematics lab, and new furniture for the largest classroom and the student lounge. “We’re putting some dollars down there, which we should, and just trying to maintain what we have,” White said. Enrollment remains strong at the WVU Parkersburg Jackson County campus due to displaced workers, returning veterans, and students looking to save some money as they start their college careers.

WVU Parkersburg officials continue to plan for the repaving and restriping of the East parking lot at the WVU Parkersburg main campus. At present, all monies collected from the student parking fees and tickets go directly into a designated fund to improve the parking lots and their safety. Regarding the time frame for paving the East lot, “We’ll just have to see if we collect enough dollars to make that happen this year,” White said. Plans also call for some of the money to be spent on two new emergency help kiosks, which will be located behind the Caperton Center and at the Jackson County campus.

Shawver Finishes his Second Year for the Riverhawks 3-29-2011

At the age of six Riverhawk basketball player Rodney Shawver started playing basketball for fun in his backyard. In the third grade, he made the Williamstown team. He moved to Williamstown from Columbus, Ohio at the age of four. His new home just so happened to be right across from Williamstown High School. His high school basketball season ended at the regional finals when Williamstown lost by one point. However, Shawver did receive second team LKC his senior year.

Besides playing basketball in high school, Shawver also participated in the golf team. He received the All-State Award his senior year for golf. He also enjoyed playing baseball and football in his spare time.

After graduating high school Shawver thought about trying to be a walk-on basketball player at either West Liberty or OVU, but instead he ended up staying at WVU Parkersburg when he found out that the college was starting a basketball team. He saw a chance to play basketball again and took it by joining the club basketball team in 2009, the same year it began. This past season, 2010-2011, the team had more games. Other teams recognized that WVU Parkersburg could actually compete in sports. Shawver served as a captain of the Riverhawk's team. “I loved coming back for another season at WVU-P and getting to take a leadership role as well,” Shawver said.

His jersey number read #23 this past season when all throughout high school his number was 21. Teammate Anthony Caplinger received the number 21 when he had been the number 23 throughout his high school career. “We wanted to switch jerseys, but for some reason they wouldn’t let us,” Shawver said.

Shawver does plan on playing for the Riverhawks next season. “We had a great season this year and we all came together as a team very well in the end,” Shawver said. While in his off-season of basketball Shawver will continue working on his degree in general business.

A Busy Month for Health and Wellness 3-29-2011

If March wasn’t a busy month for the student health and wellness group at WVU Parkersburg, then April surely will be.

The group is back at work again trying to attack different health issues head on.

Last year the group tried to help with such issues as substance abuse, breast cancer awareness and domestic violence. This year the group is supporting the fight against tobacco use. The CDC, Center for Disease Control, estimates that one of every five deaths can be attributed to tobacco use.

On March 4 the wellness group took a trip to the state Capitol where Pamela Santer, who oversees the group, and other student members set up a booth displaying the harmful and unhealthy use of tobacco products such as cigarettes.

The group didn’t only have handouts ready to be passed out but also had more visual examples of student activities against tobacco. One example on display was the 10,000 or more cigarette butts that were picked up in less than 45 minutes around campus last semester.

On April 20, WVU Parkersburg’s student health and wellness group will be celebrating Earth Day 2011. Santer and the group plan to have a booth set up with recyclable hats and reusable shopping bags.

The same day will include open invites for volunteers to sign up to help plant 300 trees around campus. People can sign up, but the planting will not occur the same day. The trees will be planted along the walking trail behind campus.

On April 28, the health and wellness group, in conjunction with the SEA, student engagement activities, will be participating in a “Be Well Day” for choosing healthy lifestyles. Booths will be showing information on health issues, but as an added bonus there will be colorful ribbons representing pink for breast cancer, purple for domestic violence and other ribbon representations.

Students and faculty are invited to participate in a parade that day which will take place on the walking path behind WVU Parkersburg. Participants are encouraged to dress up and have some sort of small-scale float by wheel barrel, wagon or other. The “float” should represent some theme on choosing a healthy lifestyle or disease prevention. The winner for the best “float” will be awarded $25 for whatever cause they choose to represent.

Students can also receive a free Frisbee if they stop by the booth on April 28. With 250 Frisbees, it will be first come, first served for a Frisbee. However, everyone can join in Frisbee games that will be held throughout the day.

Santer is excited about the upcoming events. “These are great activities for students to get together and do something good and not only do school work every day.”

Music Review: Big T 3-29-2011

Big T is the name and country music is his game. Todd Deming, aka Big T, is a native of West Virginia.

After graduating from Ravenswood High School, he continued his education at Marietta College where he played football and majored in music education.

Deming eventually left school to travel the world while playing offensive guard for the U.S. All-star’s football team. Deming played for the All-Stars for eight years before deciding to move to Maine.

During his time in Maine, he soon realized the northeast could use a proper introduction to southern rock. A new millennium had just started and with it came his newly-discovered guitar and vocal skills. The only thing missing was a band.

While searching for a name of a band, Deming’s brother suggested he use the name Wolfcreek. The name is a hand-me-down from Deming's 1984 band. With his brother’s blessing, Wolfcreek was born again.

It was not long before Deming began honing his talents by playing gigs around the New England area. After a few gigs, Big T found his calling as a singer and has not looked back since.

“I’m in this for the long haul, its not easy out there; most people go to Nashville and are promised a record deal, but most bands leave Nashville with broken dreams and empty pockets. Nashville is nothing but a commercialized tourist trap; if you are going to make it in Nashville you need an investor with lots of money,” Deming said.

He said that anyone could get a record deal, if only they had three million dollars.

“It’s not how good you sound anymore, it’s all about commercialism and politics,” he said.

“Justin’s place is respectful, safe, and friendly. Justin is a musician himself so he understands what it is like to be a starving artist. He invested a good bit of money in his establishment. The stage is a real stage and he has some really nice equipment, it’s not just some platform stuffed in a corner like in most bars around here,” Deming said.

Big T is playing some local gigs in his home state before hitting the road this spring to promote his latest album, Put Some South in Your Mouth.

Red Riding Hood 3-29-2011

Catherine Hardwicke, the director of the “Twilight” series, brings to life a children’s story most people can remember from childhood “Red Riding Hood.” This absolutely doesn’t mean its ok to bring young children who have heard the story to the movies to watch this. The PG-13 rating is right on, so no children under 13 should even come close to the theatre to see this bloody, gory and sexually suggestive themed movie.

Now for anyone wanting a movie that is similar to the “Twilight” series, you’re in luck. The movie has characteristics that are so similar it’s eerie. As far as the plot of the story, it doesn’t have many parts that will remind you of the children’s story you might have once heard years ago, but rather reminds you of a bloodier version of the “Twilight” movies.

The movie revolves around the star Amanda Seyfreid playing “Red” or Valerie. Her struggle between two men, Peter (Shiloh Fernandez) and Henry (Max Irons), and the struggle from within are the main issues she is facing throughout. Billy Burke, who surprisingly played the father in the “Twilight” series as well, plays her father.

The movie starts off in a small village within the deep woods and wastes no time getting right into the meat of the story. Within the first few minutes, the viewing audience already will have a sense of the entire problem and exactly how the townspeople are going to take care of it.

The acting in this movie seems as though casting efforts were not taken seriously, but rather just mimicked by Hardwicke’s other movie casting. Except for Oldman most of the other acting is absolutely a step down from even the “Twilight” series.

As far as ticket sales and merchandising, luckily for Hardwicke and cast, fans of “Twilight” are going to line up to see this film. As far as its theatrical value, this movie hasn’t been rated higher than a B on any movie reviews yet.

This spring and summer will definitely have more box office hits coming. Look for “Hop” a family movie that will be good for everyone to see, which comes out April 1. Starting in May and working throughout the summer many hit series will be releasing new installments such as “X-men,” “Fast Five” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

Man o Latin Bistro Boasts Wide Variety, Home Cooked Recipes 3-29-2011

Latin music seeps from the door to the front porch of the Mango Latin Bistro, while small groups gather around the four top tables inside. Muted colors wash the walls, where pops of large, hand-painted canvases sit. The smells of spices hang in the air and the rich scents of the food fill the room with a warm, comforting feel.

Mango Latin Bistro, located downtown at 701 Market St., offers Latin fair, and all of the recipes are either from the owner or her mother. The artwork on the walls is also a creation of the owner’s mother. The menu offers a wide selection of food, plenty to satisfy vegetarians and meat eaters alike.

The appetizers are all mouth watering and delicious, but the Nachos Caribeños (Caribbean Nachos) are the best. Stacked with plantain chips, chicken sauce, cheese and fresh avocado – this appetizer is plenty for a full table. It’s also very filling and could easily stand in place of a traditional entrée.

Each day the restaurant offers different specials. Be sure to ask or follow them on Facebook, as they announce different specials throughout the week and other items of interest. The specials are great and often include a serving of salad. The salads are chocked full of fresh lettuce and other seasonal vegetables.

Churrasco a la Parrila (grilled flank steak) is the first thing to order. The steak is perfectly marinated and is served with a chimichurri sauce. The steak is succulent and oh-so-tender. Most entrees are served with yellow rice, which is a perfect compliment to the steak.

Saving the best for last may sound cliché, but at Mango it’s the truth. Dessert at Mango is a one-of-a-kind experience. The desserts that this restaurant has to offer help to make it a truly specialty place. Guava purses are one of the signature desserts offered, but are only available occasionally. If they’re there, order those. A piece of guava is wrapped in dough and deep-fried just enough to melt the fruit. It’s served with a vanilla bean ice cream and dusted with powdered sugar.

Also, they offer pumpkin fritters. These little bites will melt in the mouth and delight the senses. They also smell like a fresh-baked pumpkin pie. It’s served with vanilla bean ice cream and caramel sauce. It’s really worth ordering.

Up, Up, and Away!!!: A quick and Easy Guide to Spring Time Fun 3-29-2011

With the West Virginia winter weather keeping so many people inside, spring is finally here to end the local hibernation. So, in the words of Dick Van Dyke, ‘Let’s go fly a kite!’ and the gusty April weather makes flying a kite one of the quickest remedies from cabin fever.

Kites are easy to create and can be made from a variety of materials such as newspapers, plastic, and wrapping paper. Creating and designing a unique kite with loved ones can become a great memory leaving

Many to say, ‘Remember the time we...’

A quick kite is one that can be almost completely made from materials found at a local McDonald’s.

Materials:

-McDonald’s paper bag

-5-10 McDonald’s straws

-Craft glue

-Clear Packing tape

-Kite string/ fishing line

Instructions:

-Fold the bottom of the bag inside of itself, reinforcing the sides of the bag. Use the craft glue to assure

That the bottom stays folded in.

-Use craft glue to attach the straws around the edges of the new opening. Next, use the clear packing tape to further secure the straws, but be sure to not cover the opening at any end.

-Thread a length of string about two feet long through one of the straws on the longer side of the bag

Then, tie it off creating a loop.

-Finally, tie the rest of your flying string to the loop and let your kite fly!

This type of kite is called a box kite and, according to Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, Australia, was originally created by Lawrence Hargrave in 1893 while he was developing a flying machine.

More commonly seen in America is the Eddy kite, commonly referred to as a diamond kite. This kite is

made with just two rods.

-Start by deciding the size of the kite and cut out the amount of material needed. Draw, paint, and design a unique pattern that will make the kite stand out while it is flying in the air.

-Next, tape the rods to the cloth or paper. Additional support may be needed around the edges of the kite depending on size, but tape or additional sticks may provide the extra structural support needed.

-Finally, tie of the length of flying string and this kite is ready for the skies.

Flying a kite is for every one of all ages so doesn’t be afraid to try something new this spring!

“The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.’’ So begins the epic that is the “The Dark Tower’’ series by Stephen King. Broken into seven books, the story of Roland Deschain tells a story of heroism, romance, grief, courage and not giving up in the face of extreme odds.

The first book titled ‘‘The Gunslinger’’ is five short stories that were originally published in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. When the fifth part of the story was published in 1982, all five stories were published as one book.

This book serves as an introduction to Roland, the last in a great line of warriors known as the Gunslingers. The Gunslingers are an ancient force that lived a life similar to that of the knights of medieval times.

It also introduces Jake Chambers, a young boy from New York City who dies halfway through the book only to return later in the story. It also introduces the main driving force of the book series, Roland's quest to reach the Dark Tower.

The second book, “The Drawing of the Three’’ was published in 1987. This book introduces the other two companions in Roland's quest. The first of these is Eddie Dean, who is a Heroin addict. Susannah Holmes who developed multiple personalities after having her legs cut off right below her knees.

The book also introduces the reader to Roland's incredible will, despite being on the verge of death he continues on his mission to find his companions for his trip.

The third book “The Wastelands’’ was published in 1991. The plot of this story revolves around the beginning of the quest to the Dark Tower in earnest. In the course of the book, Jake Chambers reappears in the story. The group arrives in the ancient city of Lud, where they encounter Blaine the Mono.

“Wizard and Glass”, the fourth book in the series published in 1997, picks up right where “The Wastelands” ends with Roland and his friends trying to outsmart Blaine the Mono.

After Eddie uses illogical riddles to defeat the train, the group exits in “The Stand’’ version of Topeka, Kansas. While there Roland tells the story of the first time he fell in love with a girl when he was about the age of 13.

After finishing the story the group encounters Randall Flagg, the man in black from the first book. During the encounter Roland attempts to kill him and comes very close to succeeding.

“The Wolves of the Calla”, the fifth book in the series, was published in 2003. It is a slow and tedious read that, after a while, becomes a very character driven book in a series of action driven books.

But it is also a very important book because it introduces the reader to Father Callahan, yes the Father Callahan from “Salem's Lot’’.

After the character driven “wolves,’’ the story picks back up the action driven “Song of Susannah,’’ which was published in 2004.

This is a great book to continue the story on. It starts right at the end of “Wolves” and follows our gang of heroes to many when. The first one being Maine 1977, where Eddie and Roland find themselves and the other being New York City 1999.

“The Dark Tower’’ is the best book in the series, because it is just one gunfight after another. Whether it is the gun fight to start the book with Father Callahan and Jake fighting their way through a restaurant filled with vampires the final book of the series really exemplifies what it is to be a “gun slinger.’’

This series of books is just that, a series in which you just can't come in and start with the third book and not miss anything. The books aren't stand-alone books as well; they all tie in to each other and lead to the next book. Stephen King also figured out a way to connect many of his other works into the Dark Tower Series, ranging from “Salem's Lot’’, ‘‘The Stand’’, “Heart in Atlantis’’, and “It.” Anyone who is a fan of fantasy, science fiction, westerns, or epics in general, will love these books.

New Technology Offers Great Opportunities 3-29-2011

Within any institution, maximizing the amount of educational opportunity is ideal to any student who strives to make the most of his or her college experience. For those who value the convenience of online academia, it is particularly encouraging when the availability of new technology expands access to higher education. In maintaining pace with technological expansion, WVU at Parkersburg is in the final stages of producing The Virtual Community and Technical College.

The Virtual Community and Technical College’s primary goal is to use technology to expand access to higher education by connecting students and teachers from West Virginia Community and Technical Colleges, and to provide a forum where educational resources are shared.

The Community and Technical College System of West Virginia, essentially simplifying the burden of registering with other institutions for desired online courses offered elsewhere, will support the Virtual Community and Technical College.

Jessamine Wass, who is the Institutional Administrator on WVU's E-Campus at WVU at Parkersburg, and coordinator of VCTC, explains the distinction between taking a course elsewhere through the CTC, and taking a course through VCTC.

“If a student from Blueridge College wants to sign up for a course offered through the virtual CTC, they do not have to go through all the paperwork of registering with another college. With the virtual CTC, you are already at your home institution, your just signing up for it, and we’re offering it.”

Those familiar with taking courses offered via other institutions are already aware of the inconveniences of signing up, registering, and the additional paperwork that the process encompasses. The future compatibility of the VCTC will enable students elsewhere to take desired courses without the burden of being enrolled at separate institutions. This process will beneficially impact non-traditional students, students seeking early graduation, and students needing classes not offered through their school.

In understanding the functionality of Virtual CTC, it is important to state that this is a service made available through WVU at Parkersburg. “The other colleges will pay us a fee to manage and host available courses so their students can enroll, and they get the head count,” added Wass

From a financial perspective, this is a service that will maximize potential students’ options, while generating the best bang for everyone’s buck. Monetarily speaking, institutions could cut faculty spending on courses that yield minimal attendance. Wass again illustrates... “If you offer one course and five students from separate colleges fill it up, it is going to be more cost efficient then us paying one person to teach three students here.”

WVU-Parkersburg Students Encouraged to Get Fit 3-29-2011

While winter seems to be fading fast and spring weather is coming back everyday, many students and faculty are probably thinking about one common goal — getting in better shape for the summer.

One of the least visited rooms on the WVU Parkersburg campus is also one of the most important for those who have the goal to reach those beach bods.

Room 1537, better known as the exercise room, is full of space and equipment to mold bodies into better shape with working specific muscle groups.

An area most people probably would like to target for summer are the abdominal muscles. Exercises that are generally done for this area are sit-ups and crunches. Aside from manual exercises, individuals on campus can use equipment for ab workouts. A popular choice for abdominal is the Tower 2500, though some might know it better as the “captain’s” chair.

This piece of equipment stands out because it is the only one that doesn’t do any movement. The person on the machine does all the movement. The machine basically looks like a chair that is missing the seat. Two arm rests and a back rest at a elevated position.

Persons using this should first stand on the chair and grip hand holds to stabilize themselves. Next, a user will press against the pad and contract the abs to raise the legs towards the chest. Remember: Don’t arch the back and try to keep the back against the pad. Then, slowly lower legs back down and repeat for 1-3 sets of 12-16 reps.

This is considered the second most effective ab workout by the American Council of Exercise.

The Tower 2500 is currently missing both arm rests for repair. When asked, Pamela Santer, director of health and fitness, stated that the repairs to the arm rests would have came sooner but the outrageous costs of replacing the arm rests did not meet budget expectations. “The arm rests were priced at over $200 for the pair,” Santer said. “I can repair the rests myself for a grand total of $11.”

Santer assures that the rests will be repaired and placed back on the tower as soon as possible.

As a health instructor, she teaches an aerobics class in room 1535, and she is also available for health consulting. She can help students and faculty with eating plans and specific workouts to help target specific areas of the body.

People wishing to start a workout program or eating plan should consult a doctor or physician to find out what is best for their bodies.

Students To Attend Class Via TV 3-29-2011

Any students in the nursing program who live outside of the Parkersburg area will be interested to hear that an opportunity to continue their education without the hassle of an everyday commute is becoming available. WVU Parkersburg is announcing its “Expanded Access Program.” This program will be starting this summer and continuing into the fall.

These courses are brought to students by live lecture broadcasts, which will be transmitted directly from WVU Parkersburg to the surrounding rural areas. These broadcasts are solely to help prepare students for a career in nursing.

This program is made possible by the Rural Health Alliance and the Department of Labor. By doing so, this program allows students to save time and money by not having to make the usual trips back and forth to school. This could be especially important to some students considering gas prices are on the rise.

By utilizing this technology to its maximum potential, students may be able to someday attend all classes via television. This is helpful for a few reasons such as: people who are sick or injured or those who have lost transportation.

But, for now, this program reaches out only to students in the nursing program. While the listings here are currently accurate, some changes may occur. The information listings are available at http://sites.google.com/site/expandedaccess.

Any students in the nursing program that live in the surrounding areas are encouraged to take advantage of this program. The Expanded Access Program is partially funded and made possible by the Rural Health Alliance and by the Department of Labor.

How Campus Security affects Student Body 3-29-2011

"Bad Boys, bad boys, what you gonaa do?"

Campus safety is one of many attributes to a student's college career.

Al Collins, the head of WVU Parkersburg’s campus security, has seven security guards to help him maintain a tight level of security on campus. Security guards also work beside the Parkersburg Police and Wood County Sherriff's department once a year for police training. Collins said that the security guards are his “eyes and ears” to incidents that may occur on campus.

A number of students had similar concerns regarding their safety at school. Freshman Kristen Sheppard said, “I think it would be nice if there was someone patrolling the parking lot in the evenings, or all the time for that matter, but especially in the evenings. I’m worried about people being in the parking lot at night.”

Cassandra Mills also had a similar quarrel. “I feel pretty safe on campus, but think cameras in the parking lot would be a good addition to the security,” she said.

What a lot of new and even seasoned students may not know is that the campus has two cameras in the lower parking lot, the Caperton Center lot and in the Workforce and Community Education building.

Emergency buttons are located on the middle pole in the upper and lower parking lots. If a student presses the button in the event of an emergency, 911 is instantly notified.

Cameras are also located in the Early Learning Center, and a security guard is on campus 24/7 patrolling the lots and the buildings.

Sophomore Jessica Cross was also concerned about the lack of camera security. “I think they should put surveillance cameras in the lounge area,” she said

Collins stated that installing more cameras throughout the campus is “a timely and costly process. Slowly but surely we’ll have more cameras, as soon as our budget allows us to.”

Students are urged to browse the Jeanne Clery report, better known as the Crime Statistics Report, located on WVU Parkersburg’s website under the campus safety portion. Every college that receives federal funding is required to have this report available for the public to view. The Clery report covers the past three years of incidents. Collins pointed out that the campus is “one of the safest in the nation” according to the Clery reports, past and present.

The campus police encourage students to report any incidents they see, regardless of whether or not the student thinks the incident is trivial or harmless.

“Thousands of sets of eyes work better than two, so please report any incident you see and be vigilant. We want everyone to be safe,” Collins said. If you notice something suspicous contact the campus security team.

Library Has Access to Textbooks for Students 3-29-2011

While the WVU Parkersburg library is a vital tool used to help ensure student success, it should not be taken for granted. Many students use the library as a place to check their e-mails and update statuses, while others take advantage of the free learning materials.

The textbooks in the library are free to use, although students may not check them out. This is a blessing for many students who simply can’t afford all of their books or even to students who have lost theirs. But, the question remains: Who buys the books for the library?

Their respective instructors give some textbooks to the library. This is to ensure that their students are guaranteed access to at least one copy of the book. However, not all instructors are so apt to give up textbooks nor do they have extra copies to donate. According to Library Director Stephen Hupp, many of the textbooks are bought and donated by Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs Rhonda Richards-Tracy.

The idea of having a book drive to help students maintain easy access to needed books was considered, until it was brought to light that the needed textbooks change nearly every semester. So, even if a student wanted to donate a book after using it for a semester, it would probably be outdated.

Mr. Hupp explained rumors exist that new state laws may force teachers to donate at least one copy of there required textbooks to the library. Even if the legislation doesn’t force the instructors to donate books, students should still encourage their teachers to relinquish a copy to the library.

“The library is such a great place for doing research, studying and homework. It makes it even nicer that most of the textbooks students need are they’re waiting for them,” said Alikka Stephens

Student Gives New Meaning to "Senior" Class

Sharon Marshall O’Neill is a woman who believes that the word “can’t” is the dirtiest word in the English language. She’s also quick to list a number of accomplishments that she was told can’t be done… Secretarial courses, Accounting courses, the Civil Service test, employment through the Board of Education, and ultimately 34 years of service at the Department of Treasury. These are all achievements that have paved a path for a comfortable retirement that many would be glad to boast. Sharon’s different, and before she lays claim to obstacles overcome, she is fast to emphasize that her accomplishments weren’t without conflict.

“I had a very bad childhood, and a very bad marriage. This isn’t uncommon to what many people go through, but I encourage people who go through these situations to get past them,” O’Neill stated, then added, “You can’t let it stop you!”

This advice might strike some as universal, but the weight of the message augments when you consider Sharon’s situation. That’s because O’Neill has opted to pursue her college degree at the remarkable age of 75.

People told me, ‘You can’t go back to school at your age’…“Here I am!

“I’ve been here since September of 2009 and I have an A average,” stated O’Neill with certain enthusiasm.

Sharon is currently pursuing her Associate’s degree with an emphasis in history. What’s more, she intends to get her Bachelor’s degree following her Associate’s.

“I will be over 80 by the time I receive my Bachelor’s degree,” she stated.

Regarding her motivation to attend college at the age of 73, Sharon attributes her tenure to the goals she has set.

“You’ve got to make yourself do it… you can’t just fiddle. If you set one goal, then make the next one bigger,” said O’Neill. She’s fast to reiterate that being told she can’t attend college at her age played a role in her attendance. On the subject of motivation, Sharon is quick to comment, “Can’t is the dirtiest word in the English language.”

In comparing her academic efforts today to her past studies, she feels school today is a lot harder than it used to be. More specifically, she shared that the hardest part of her experience has been the memorization that curriculums encompass. “I don’t think there has been one class that we didn’t have to memorize in,” O’Neill stated.

Beyond academics, it is a spectacle to witness the energy of life that Sharon brings to academia. She will tell you herself that her determination comes from her willingness to learn new things.

“Don’t let a day go by where you didn’t learn something new. Whether it’s a new word, whether you meet somebody new, you have to have change. It’s a dynamic world, and you can’t just be a vegetable,” said O’Neill.

Student Enjoys College, Work

Fred Morlan

Fred Morlan, a pre-pharmacy major at WVU Parkersburg, has a job at Kroger pharmacy where he works 16 hours a week. He is able to work while still going to school, and even gets college credit for his hours worked. This is all accomplished through cooperative education.

Morlan, who has been working at Kroger for over four months now, was told about co-op through his Chemistry professor. When he’s working, Morlan takes new prescriptions and manages stock, as well as several other things that keep him busy. “I do a little bit of everything.”

Because he works 16 hours a week, Morlan is receiving four college credit hours this semester towards his major. This is a huge help for students. His only other classes this semester are Organic Chemistry 2 and Microbiology.

Morlan has been a student at WVU Parkersburg since the fall of 2009. “I was pretty much set on Pre-Pharmacy, then after taking the classes, I realized I was set on it.”

When asked if he would like to stay with Kroger after graduating, Morlan said, “I wouldn’t be opposed to working at Kroger. I really like it there. Plus, that’s a few years away. I don’t have anywhere else in particular I would rather work.”

Most students consider their co-op jobs to be a great experience. Morlan adds, “I think it’s a very positive thing to be able to learn first-hand about your career path and know you’ve made the right decision before graduating.”

Morlan believes co-op jobs aren’t for lazy students and can take up a lot of time, especially when students also have other classes at the college. Going into pre-pharmacy only adds to Morlan’s stress, saying, “What do I do in my spare time? That’s a good hypothetical question.”

Al Edwards, head of the co-op department believes that even though it can put more stress on students, in the long run, co-op is completely worth the time students put into it. The on-the-job training is something students are unable to gain on campus, but definitely something that is needed.

LPN Changes Career to Professor

Kim Korcsmaros (pronounced course-marROWS) is a new professor to the WVU Parkersburg campus. She is a woman who has worn many hats in her past before deciding to make the Mid-Ohio Valley her permanent home.

Kim was not always in the teaching profession. She received her LPN from the Raleigh County Vocational Technical Center in Beckley, W. Va. She spent the next 16 years as an LPN before discovering her love of teaching.

“I wanted to be a nurse and I loved it,” Korcsmaros said. Kim worked at WVU hospitals in Morgantown in the orthopedic surgery department.

It was there where she discovered that teaching was her real passion.

“I was working with families, creating worksheets and lessons,” recalled Korcsmaros.

Kim was at a point in her career when she was asked to make a choice, go on to get her RN and take an administrative position or take a different path.

Kim went on to get her Regents B.A in communication studies from Fairmont State University and later her M.A in teaching and oral communications from Marshall University.

Prior to coming to the college, Kim was working at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Va. when one day her daughter called with a request. She wanted to start a family with her husband and wanted Kim to move to Parkersburg so her future children would grow up knowing their grandmother.

It was spring break at Bridgewater when this out-of-the blue request came to her. Kim thought long about the best choice for her. This request was given to her at a time when her contract was about to expire with the college.

Once break was over at Bridgewater, Kim advised the dean that she was not going to renew her contract and was moving to West Virginia. When the dean asked her if she had another job offer, Kim responded with a simple, “No, I do not.”

She left that position at Bridgewater knowing that being in West Virginia with her family was where she needed to be.

As luck would have it, she was correct. The very next day WVU Parkersburg called her requesting an interview and an offer to teach at the college.

Outside of teaching, Kim enjoys working in her garden and harvesting everything from flowers to vegetables. She is also very interested in woodworking and plans to reclaim her tools and get back into creating decorative items.

Kim is also a self-proclaimed HGTV addict and remodeling work on her house has become a current passion of hers.

But none of this compares to her decision to move to be near her daughter.

Three weeks ago, she welcomed her first grandson, Jack James, the apple of this professor's eye.

At the end of the day, Kim makes said it is her passion to inspire her students. She wants for them to find that something to make their life meaningful.

She strives to bring a positive and joyous outlook to all her classes.

“It has been a pleasure to meet a new group of wonderful students,” Korcsmaros said.

Once an old friend sent her a great quote. It became her life’s motto and she wants everyone to question what his or her passion may be:

“Life may not be the party we wanted, but while we are here we should dance.”

Stay or Go?

The federal government has initiated several budget cuts nationwide, but one in particular impacts students close to home. The Parkersburg High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) is scheduled to dissolve at the end of the year. According to Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Greg Smith, with decreasing interest and enrollment, the Department of the Navy has decided the PHS NJROTC program is just not cost effective. “We need to show the Navy just how valuable this relatively cheap program is. Just one F-18 demonstration flight could keep this program open for an additional eight years,” Smith said.

WVU Parkersburg Veterans Corps members attended the community support rally held March 14 on the front lawn of PHS. “It’s very important to show our complete support, sign the petitions and talk with the people involved,” John Wilson, veteran work study, said.

The meeting is simply another step in the long process of saving this program. “We are going to follow the old saying, ‘The squeaky wheel gets the oil,’ and we are going to be as squeaky as we can be,” Ralph Board, PHS principal, said. “The cadets love the program; the programs loves PHS and PHS loves this program,” Board said. Several politicians either sent representatives or attended. Todd Anderson, representative from Senator Manchin’s office read a letter from Manchin addressing the PHS NJROTC cadets and supporters. “I am in complete support of this NJROTC program and have sent a letter to the Department of the Navy on your behalf,” Anderson read.

Parkersburg Chief of Police Joseph Martin represented the City of Parkersburg in voicing concern for the loss of this program. “You guys need to work hard promoting and recruiting yourselves. You can save this program by showing the Navy the support this program can have. Increase your numbers and increase your value,” Martin said.
